From the post game comments by Sherri Coale available on Soonersports.com.

"Well I think there is no lid on the potential for his young team. I was watching tonight the connection that Stu (Peyton Little) and Maddie (Manning) had on the floor. Just kind of a basketball savvy connection without saying a word. They just kind of get it. I'm thinking to myself 'this is their first season on the floor together' and how much that's going to grow over the next three years. A freshman point guard (Gabbi Ortiz) who's backed up by an old sophomore (T'Ona Edwards) point guard. I mean it's just everywhere. There's youth everywhere. So, I think as long as we keep that youth hungry, and improving and willing to get better, and push themselves and stretch themselves, then we have something special for a while."

In her first game for OU, T'Ona looked like the best point guard we had ever had. I think that was an exhibition game. Then, she became a freshman. But, recently, she has begun to make some very nice connections on some passes. She is getting a lot of assists for the few minutes that she is in every game. She is doing a much better job on cutting down on her turnovers, and she may just steal it herself as she did to Prince. She seems to be developing a sense of where players will be, and she is giving good minutes despite the fact that she has absolutely no shot. She is pretty good on defense.

With the ball in T'Ona's, Peyton's, Gabbi's, or Maddie's hands, I think we are pretty safe in saying that the number of turnovers is declining. When we make them, it usually isn't our guards any more. They are more likely to be forcing them than making them.

This group is developing a fit for each other.

I have been impressed with Edward's ability to push the ball, drive it and pass. Her defense has been as good as anyone on the team, I think. Especially given that she's not getting starter minutes.

Been happy with her. I wish she would develop a mid-range jumper though. Man, she could be deadly.

I agree. Edward's is scary quick and deceptive. A mid-range jumper would definitely make her more of a threat. Teams don't guard her too tight on the perimeter which makes it easier for them to sag on the post sometimes. I'm sure she's working on it. Would surprise me if she wasn't.

A pull-up jump shot with her quickness wold be unguardable and keep a defender on her.

I guess I don't quite feel as comfortable as some of you about Edwards ability to have a positive impact on the game - not yet at least.

I do assume Sherri feels lots of pressure to allow her to get more experience so we have an option at point, and that is why she is playing her quite a bit. But I always feel some nerviousness when she comes in because it seems clear to me that two things will happen:

1. The scoring will take a hit- as it did with the "whole team' substitutions last night.

2. The turnovers will increase - although you are probably right that she has improved at least some on that.

Now about the shooting. Is that really something that can be significantly improved from year to year? Or is there actual natural skill involved? I cannot run fast enough to win the Olympics - no matter how much and how hard I practice. Is shooting really different? Oh, I can see achieving a very moderate amount of improvement - but can we actually expect a player to make great strides in it?

+1. It doesn't appear her shooting is any better than it was last year and it's not likely to improve.

I tend to have much the same feelings about her entry. Sometimes, it works because she does occasionally make some brilliant passes. At other times,,,,,

I think DRob entered without a shot and taught herself a jump shot. Her free throw shooting also improved dramatically. She has never developed a three pointer.

Next time let's schedule them at 10:30 a.m. on a weekday and bus in as many Oklahoma elementary screamers as possible.

As far as shooting goes it does take considerable work to develop a consistent shot. I played the old 6 on 6 basketball where I was a guard and never shot. Went to college and found out you had to score to play so I spent hours upon hours working at it. I finally became a threat but it does take time. Not impossible but yes they can make great strides.
