Sittler: Jeff Capel watch begins >>> Tulsa World

Capel is responsible for the fall from grace OU has experienced since the Sooners went 30-6 three years ago.

This is a very blunt but true observation by Sittler. Capel is responsible. I like it when English is used precisely and bluntly to point out truth. But some would go a step further and claim that Capel has caused all of our current troubles. Nope, not truth. He caused some troubles. Failed to prevent others. And fought like the dickens to fix things. Had some meager successes this year. It is a very complex mess. But all of those things and all of that losing is the past and cannot be altered.

Joe C has the weighty responsibility of looking to the future. Given all the facts known today and out of all alternatives realistically available is Jeff Capel or someone else in a better position to fix things. It is a difficult decision to say the least. That is why this board and the Sooner nation as a whole has mixed feelings. I will support Sooner Basketball whatever the decision.

This article is ridiculous... "Sources close to the situation..." come on man, anybody can say that. Then his comment about Goff is also poor journalism. This dude was recruited by the likes of: Indiana & Ohio State; both which gave him offers (http://rivals.yahoo.com/oklahoma/basketball/recruiting/player-Robert-Goff-70078). This article is written by a guy who has already made his mind up, but doesn't have a big enough pair to say it, for fear he might be wrong. I am so tired of people with sour attitudes toward this program, and I can't say I blame them, talk as though they know what is best for this program. The dude took us to the Elite 8 just 2 years ago, and yes the last 2 years have been crappy; but what is firing our coach going to do? All it is going to do, is make us have another crappy year; and perhaps loose some of the young talent that we have on this team. I know sometimes you have to cut ties, but only after 2 years? I know some of you guys think you know what is best; I mean you played High School ball, so you must know what is best. So, thank you Sittler for telling us something we already know, you hate OU basketball and Jeff Capel is on the "hot seat". But please do better journalism than, "sources say" and "not highly recruited".

All this is is a repeat of what we have heard from Emig. Emig being the beat writer could have gotten the info from another columnist there, but was told to run with it as the beat writer which is how things work at papers mostly. They don't want to embarrass the guy that is suppose to be on top of things.Sittler is trying to take the heat off of Emig who has botched some of this. Sittler is a tool and never played a sport of any kind after the 5th grade.

Our program demise is complex but I sincerely think it falls at Joe C.'s feet. There were several coaches who would have come at 1.5 million but Joe being the fiscal conservative and watch dog he is balked. A bigger name coach might have been able to keep Reynolds and James. We won't ever know. Capel it was thought that his player star status and Duke persona was the next Bob Stoops would thrive. Well Capel has had some bad luck but it really seems like the media is really divided on his status. Sittler says behind closed doors Capel is worried. We will see. Hard to judge what is really going on.

Why would Capel be worried? Doesn't he get a bang load of money just to be fired?

yeah and he will land on his feet pretty quickly

Yep. After destroying the OU Basketball program, Jeff will laugh all the way to the bank. Good for Jeff. Stay or go, Jeff will be set. Hell, Jeff cannot lose.

Unfortunately, the OU basketball fan has been screwed. The season ticket holders have been screwed. But, by golly, good ol' Jeff will land on his feet. Rich, fat and happy. Way to go there Jeff!

“Finishing 14-18, the Sooners have compiled back-to-back losing seasons for the first time in 45 years ...”
What a deal! getting paid millions for doing a terrible job.

But, what should we expect? It wasn’t Jeff’s fault.

Fascinating. I didn't know that you could get so angry. I hate to see solid fans in such turmoil. I am just not that certain that we would be better off.

Two losing seasons in a row.
Essentially the same players coming back.
Talented recruits coming no where near Norman.
Yet you think a coaching change has a greater chance of making us WORSE.
Fear can be paralyzing.

correct

correct. but the majority of them will be older and improving.

untrue no matter how you look at it.

it has a chance of making us worse or better.

quite ironic

So who is on their way here? Cuz right now it is Goff that might or might not qualify and no one else.

How could we be worse off. Jeff has turned longtime solid fans into spectators with complete apathy. And believe me, there are many like me, except they do not look at message boards.

Seats near mine that were filled for 30 years are now empty. I just hope a new coach can bring these fans back. Given the level of disgust, they may be gone for good. Jeff may have made us all TV fans.

jeff has brought quite a few high profile recruits to norman. it was just last year we had 3 mcdAA on campus. You don't know what you are talking about.

Usually, this type of anger revolves around some personal issues, like you suspect his character rather than his competence?

God i want to buy some pot from you.

u said that talented recruits are not coming anywhere close to norman.

To me that means we are not signing any highly rated players or being in the conversation for highly rated players.

Both of those statements are not true.

Warren, TMG, and Gallon weren't McDonald's All-Americans.

At least, deal with facts. They make arguments more cogent.

Two signed 2 years ago after an elite 8 season.
The other, 3 years ago to play with Blake.

That is ancient history.

I don't expect Capel to sign anyone this year that is better than the players we have on the team.
And Capel admitted he HAS to get better players.

The statement being critiqued indicated that there had been three McDonald's All-Americans here last year. Was that true?

Warren came to play with Blake? I didn't know that he was that team-oriented.

this season we have no McD AA's we have one guy signed, who might not qualify, Those are the facts.
