If you already haven't done it, you might want to watch the short videos of interviews with the players on soonersports. it all sounds pretty good.

Grooms says he has been working endlessly on his jump shot. As far as I can see, his lack of a consistent shot from around the key is about his only weakness or flaw. If he has fixed this problem, then we will be a much better team with or without the new kids. Grooms also talks highly of cousins and Hornbeak. Reading between the lines, he seems to really think highly of cousins. So, maybe one or both of these kids will help.

Osby says he has gotten healthy and stronger. He said he rebounded ok some of the time but wasn't consistent and thought he would be this year. Seems more confident. Health, confidence and consistency were his bug a boos last year. Again, it sounds like he sees where he needed to improve and has been working on it. He was asked about Amath, and you can really tell he thinks he is good.

Pledger says he has lost 15/20 pounds. He really need to do this and improve on his perimeter quickness. So, this sounds positive. He also said that Bennett was the most impressive newcomer. Said he is athletic and can really rebound and block shots, and has huge hands, and offensively, he catches everything and can finish around the rim. If this is true, then Bennett could really help us. I know I didn't expect much from him, just reading about him after he committed.

Of course, there have been numerous threads in the last few weeks about different people (griffin etc) talking about Amath. He was just named pre season newcomer of the year by the league coaches. So, hopefully he is the real deal.

So, without having seen any of these kids yet, it all sounds really good. Hard to believe it will all pan out as good as we hope. Is it possible that Grooms will have a reliable jump shot, Osby will be consistent inside, Bennett will be a big time interior defender, Mbuye will be a NBA lottery 3/4 for us, pledger will be quicker and better defender and remain a reliable outside shooter, and all the freshman guards will give us impact minutes, including one or more at the point. Seems just too much to hope for, so we will just have to see.

In any event, it is hard to see how we could possibly be worse, and almost have to be substantially improved.

I'd say this just based on the second year of CLK and if we just had everybody coming back. Instead we added two guys that run about 6'9" one of whom is definitely not a stiff and one will probably give good energy. Throw in three young guys for depth and I feel good. Sounds like everybody is in this thing together, so let's keep our fingers crossed.

OU has so many ifs this year but I am optimistic.

If Bennet is a legitiamte Big XII role player that will be a big boost to the team.

If M'Baye is a starter that will be a huge difference for the team

No matter what the freshman guards are a boost to the team. If one of them steps up and makes a notable contribution it will be a big boost.

Cam Clark shot .474 from the field and .373 from the 3 point line as a freshman. If he can find his shot this year it will notably improve the team.

Sam Grooms shot .382 from the three point line in Juco, if he can find his shot OU will be notably improved.

If Pledger is quicker, OU will be a better team.

What really excites me is the possibility that all or most of this will be true. Honeslty, I don't see how Grooms and Clark don't shoot better. Pledger dropping 15lbs has to make him quicker. Everyone is saying M'BAye is the real deal. Even if they are wrong about being an NBA level player, he should be a solid Big XII player. The added depth has to help. All three freshman are higher rated players than Carl Blair.

I don't think OU will win the Big XII but I think they will be an NCAA team.

If OU isn't a NCAA team this year, I honestly will be disappointed.

Me too, but we need to remember where we were the last three years. This team has Big Dance potential, but let's start with a winning record as our first aspiration.

It'll come down to guard play. I just want to see postseason play first.

I've always been in the camp that the post season NIT is worthless except for an uber young team. Being this is mostly a seasoned team, a NIT appearance wouldn't do much for this team going forward except a couple of young guys.

i LOVE this!!!! if that guy is a good player i will be estatic!

Excellent post cowboysooner.

I also believe that OU will be improved; however, if OU is a NCAA Tournament team this year, I will be ecstatic!

THAT, would be a huge jump from where we have been.

ditto...excellent post cowboysooner. some very nice positives and feel like we can make the dance if all goes well.

? anyone know what DJ's vertical is? with a 7'5 wingspan, if he is around 38-40'' that will be great, anything more than that would be awesome. I figured he was pretty athletic when recruiting him, I know Anderson at Arkie really wanted him. he's intriguing to me and hopefully he can be a solid contributer and if he's a good jumper to go with that ridiculous WS, we may have something good in him as he is athletic adn from an early report, he wants to be good and is really putting in the work to improve his overall game. always great to hear that from a player.

It isn't really that seasoned at guard outside of Pledger. And that is where NCAA teams are made.

Good stuff, cowboysooner!

If the points you've addressed prove to be correct, I think OU could compete for a top four or five spot in conference this season. An improvement in Grooms' shooting percentage is key, at least IMO. He was a solid point guard last year, except for his dismal shooting percentage.

I like the part about Bennett. I can tell you for sure that he definitely passes the eye test. One look at the guy and you think, "that dude has to be good!" If he can contribute meaningful minutes off of the bench, OU should be much improved at the post positions.

I didn't notice much of a change in Pledger's physique. But if he has lost 15 to 20 pounds, it can't help but increase his footspeed and his stamina. Sure hope that's true.

Pledger- senior
Grooms- senior
Cam- junior

And then add the young guys in there (if they are even getting significant game time).

There is really only one post season IMO and that is the NCAA tourney.

Clark is more a SF. And how many postseason/ important games have these guys played in?

Getting postseason experience is a big thing for a program that is building like we are right now.

At some point you have to go from not being in the postseason to getting into the postseason. This is probably our best opportunity to do that in a while, I guess I am just lost on the point you are trying to make here. Our two starting guards are seniors.

There is no difference in Cam, college SF's, and guards. If he is playing the 3 spot for OU, and you make the comment that guards win college basketball games, then you are talking about Cam.

And while on paper we don't have the strongest set of guards OU has ever had, we do have some strength inside with guys like Osby, Fitz, and M'Baye. I think those guys have the ability to compensate for any shortage of guard play we might experience.

I thinks it's fair to say this: whatever you want to call it (experience, seasoning, etc.), we have it in bushel baskets EXCEPT in the postseason. Scrounging to get a NIT bid last season or the last 2 seasons would have done wonders for our guards, specifically, and the team in general this season. One thing we should have in abundance is hunger. Like depths of the winter, no prey, wolf hunger!

Clark is a wing player....SF in OU's sets is not a front court player.
