Sources: Capel to return to Duke as assistant

I think that any assistant can learn a lot about x's and o's by being an assistant to Coach K. But, I'm not sure being an assistant to Coach K teaches them to evaluate the true potential of the non-blue chip players or how to deal with players with character or motivation issues - simply because Duke seldom has players like that.

He should make a nice assistant there... The program sells itself so he wont have to do much recruiting, Coach K is a hall of famer so he wont have to do much coaching, etc.

If Capel's happy about this, then I'm happy for him. But I am a bit surprised about him taking an Assistant job, even if it's for his alma mater.

I guess that by being an AC for a couple of years under Coach K, he'll get asked to take a HC job again. It could be a good learning experience for him.

Agree completely. Duke is a relatively adversity free environment for a basketball assistant. There are things 99% of head coaches have to deal with that just aren't common at Duke.

Duke just jumped to the top/near the top of Julius Randle's list.

To me, Capel is an assistant coach. So why not go back and be an assistant in a great program. Let's face it, he wasn't on anyone's radar to be a head coach.

I talked with Capel a week ago in Dallas and he clearly was recruiting some of the top players at the EYBL event. Julius Randle was clearly his top target.

He's pretty much going to be Coach K's coach in waiting. And I'm sure he'll do well there because he won't have to worry that much about recruiting questionable characters like TMG or Gallon or Warren that ended up not doing well for OU. You can't really just not go to school and have a chance to make it at Duke like TMG basically did.

Well said Duke is probably where he belongs. Notice all the other former players on K's staff. Different environment than almost any other school.

My wife was on a flight to Atlanta last week and sat a row in front of Capel. She heard him tell the traveler sitting next to him that he was going to return to Durham to "help out at Duke".

lol

Capel barely got a look for any of the job openings this year. An assistants position was all he could hope for.

johnny dawkins probably hasn't coached his way back onto the "successor to K" bubble by being average at Stanford, but i doubt it's Jeff.

and i like Jeff OK.

I would like to see Jeff challenge himself. To me, this is no way does that

That's a fair point. I'm happy for him and I bet he's ecstatic for this change, but this should be a relatively easier gig compared to basically any other assistant job.

Will point out that his biggest flaw IMO was evaluating the character of his recruits, so this change should help him exponentially.

And his assistant coaching job is probably 10 Xs better than your job.

Capel wouldn't laugh about your job, because he is a class act.
