Spangler > Bookout

What was Spangler rated coming out of HS? What other offers did he have?

2/3 star. Zags, then Tulsa- places like that. But, one needs to consider, most of these basketball players are one sport stars. Spangler was a really good football player and if he had stuck to basketball only it isn't unreasonable to assume that he could have been a 3 star top 150 type.

Spangler almost beat Douglas with 3-4 d1 kids in the 4a State Championship, by himself. (some qualified, some didn't)

I only fault Capel for not recruiting him b/c we ended up with a pupu platter instead. It's obvious he is of OU quality now, but based on recruiting ranking only, OU (and OSU) regularly pass on guys like that. And given that Tulsa might have been his 2nd best scholarship offer (a bad Tulsa program), if Capel missed on recruiting/scouting him, so did a lot of others.

But I'm glad he is here now. The next 3 seasons are going to be a blast to watch.

WT, I took a quick look. His other offers were Colorado, TCU, and Tulsa.

I wonder if Bookout would have been a better player without the shoulder injury? He was pretty good with it but I think it impacted his outside shooting.

I think you are right Gary on Tulsa, Colorado, and TCU but I think these are the ones that Spangler narrowed his choices to because I remeber reading somewhere that Craighton and Penn State had also offerd. I dont think Ryan saw the full effect of BB recruiting because he was also considering FB offers and I know us here in the Tuttle area thought he was going FB.

First off, did the kid ever play for Tuttle, I thought he played for Bridge Creek?

Ryan is a hell of a player, doing the dirty work and it's going to pay off for him this season!! I know he doesn't shoot a lot of threes but with range he kind of reminds me of Chandler Parsons!! I hope Ryan continues to work hard on his game, mostly free throws right now, because he'll be a big part of this teams success.

No matter how many times Bob Carpenter says he played at Tuttle he didn't, bridge creek is correct.

I'm sure his address is probably in Tuttle, but dksooner is correct, he played at Bridge Creek. Schools are probably less than 10 miles apart.

You are correct, Ryan went to school at Bridge Creek and graduated from there and probably the reason they use Tuttle or Blanchard is because Bridge Creek is not a town. Bridge Creek address is actually Blanchard, but I think his home address is Tuttle.

So Spangler didn't collect another board after my post and did appear to tire out some. He was playing at warp speed!! Probably all jacked up for his first home game.

I'm still impressed.

Tri-City, I live in NewCastle all three schools are with in 10 miles, add in Blanchard and you have 4 within that distance. Just useless info, I'm full of it!!

I don't see the comparison. Spangler is a classic power forward and looks the part. Kevin was an NFL lottery pick defensive or offensive tackle that didn't want to play football.

In history, there has never been a more talented bunch of kids so mislead and given bad advise, albeit well intended, by parents. All 3 of the bookout kids could have been high d1 football recruits and nfl players, and made milions. But instead, one played baseball and was too slow to play pro ball, one played basketball and was not sufficiently tall and athletic to play in the Nba and one participated in track.

So, you are parents of 3 kids that are all 6'7 and carry 275 pounds like most carry 150 pounds. All three are uniquely athletic and quick for their size. And you promote their participation in sports that, due to their limitations in those sports, can't possibly succeed past college. I don't get it. Tapper tells the story of a high school coach that asked him whether he wanted to drive a chevy or lamborgini (might have these cars wrong), and told him that a 6-5 kid with his quickness was unique in football and a dime a dozen in basketball. Tapper will play in the nba, he would be playing at northeastern in basketball, if that.

I know a former coach at Midwest city that convinced Matt Kemp to play baseball instead of basketball, his first love. The analysis was the same. He had unique size and speed for baseball but not for basketball and if he wanted to play for pay, he would need to go baseball. He makes about 15 million a year now playing baseball.

Loved bookout and he was a good player for us. But, spangler will end up being a much better player in my opinion.

Bookout was a space filler and was good at using position. Spangler is athletic and not really a big guy like Bookout was. They are polar opposites in a lot of ways.

Kevin was a smaller version of big country! I still enjoyed watching him play though!!

The other guy that we inexplicably missed on was Tyrus McGhee. That guy was an incredible shooter and a great find for Iowa State.

Anyone know the story of how or why Felton didn't offer him?
