Does anyone remember what went on with his recruiting out of high school? How did OU and OSU miss on him?

In fairness to Capel, lots of schools didn't recruit Spangler. I am not sure why. Maybe they thought he was going to play football. Surely they got that he was a great athlete. He stared in two sports. He was the QB and punter in high school. They guy is a great athlete.

OSwho didn't offer either. Many thought he was going to play d1 football. Recruiting misses happen EVERY year. Even state players of the year.

Lets move on...

Exactly and we ended up with Nick Thompson.

the ol' lumberjack and team captain that promptly began to get 0 minutes... capel didnt realized he sucked even after starting him for multiple games... :facepalm

I am just tickled pink to have Spangler now. What a wonderful player to go with this group of guards!

I'm guessing going to Gonzaga helped him out a lot coming back here because they had a lot of good big guys to learn from. It's probably a good thing he didn't come to OU with the environment we had at the end of the Capel era.

We still talk about it because it still ticks some of us off. I know it does me. How could he go watch that kid and not think he could have helped our program as post depth, even if he would have landed his burger boys. The few times I watched him in HS it was obvious to my untrained eye that he was a high DI player. It drove me nuts then, and it's still stuck in my craw!!!! Sorry for the rant.

It worked out for the best. He has experienced two good college coaches (Mark Few and Lon Kruger), plus we get to watch him play at OU for two more years after this one.

It is all good.

I remember the concern expressed on this message board last summer ... How can OU possibly replace Osby's toughness and rebounding? Osby was a wonderful Sooner, and so is Spangler.

Who knows what drove Capel away ... but it wasn't just Capel. There were many schools that had a chance to offer Spangler and didn't. Obviously there was some issue there that Gonzaga was willing to look past and he proved himself to overcome it in that first year there. Maybe it was academics? Maybe he had some personal issues?

Who knows now. Really, it doesn't matter. But I wouldn't just use it as an axe on Capel. He wasn't alone in looking past Spangler and now it's just a HUGE bonus for this Sooner team!!

Its a bad dream that wont go away. Why keep talking about this. LK has been here for 3 years. Its over let it go!

If his name comes up (Capel) I can't help myself. I love OU sports and I have great disdain for people who hurt our product.

All OU fans should insult Capel at very opportunity. If you love OU basketball you need to despise Jeff Capel. Honestly Joe C is lucky I don't rag on him all the time for hiring Capel.

Sometimes you hafta suffer some lumps before you learn enough to do things the right way. After seeing the way coach Lon has turned things in Norman I really think HE is "the right way" and we had to suffer some other lumps before we were willing to do what it took to hire him away. So Capel was just part of our road to get there.

You have no idea what Spangler looked like in HS.

Maybe he was a bit of a late bloomer. Maybe Capel watched him a couple of times, and Spangler played poorly each time. Maybe he didn't fit what Capel was looking for at the time.

Nobody thinks less of Jeff Capel as a coach than I do. But when a kid is missing anything resembling top offers, other than Gonzaga, I refuse to jump on our coach for not going after him. A LOT of coaches missed on him.

WT, I disagree with you on a lot of things. Most of the time I can see how you might have landed on the position you took, even thought I think it is wrong. On this one, I don't have a clue how you can cut Capel any slack.

A whole bunch of people missed on Spangler. But, Capel was the only one that was 12 miles down the road. Spangler was no mystery man to the OU program. There were a lot of people inside and outside of the program that were lobbying him to take Spangler. Capel just got hard headed about him and passed. He passed on Spangler and yet in brought in worse players that had inferior credentials.

Capel was trying to get the top recruits in the nation instead of the top recruits in this area.
