Since Oronde Taliaferro's departure "his recruits" began to drop like flies.

I'm sure that was a strategy to ensure his "perceived" influence on a particular recruit wasn't going to be seen poorly in the eyes of the NCAA.

We all knew he got caught with his hand in the cookie jar when the Gallon issue came up, and his abrupt departure was concluded.

What I find strange is how Capel survived this?

This is WORSE than Kelvin Sampson telephone/text gate. A LOT WORSE IMHO, if found true!

Is it too early still?

Is OU going to write this off as a rouge assistant to the NCAA, or were the financial transactions NEVER truly made? I hope it wasn't made.

And, I hope Capel had a rouge assistant booted from the staff.

It is safe to assume there is no evidence at this point that Jeff was involved in any way nor is there evidence that he knew of the transfer of money to Gallon and/or his Mom. Otherwise, Jeff be gone.

We need to allow the investigation to continue before making snap decisions when NO ONE on this board knows the facts.

Joe C's staunch support of Capel tells me that, at least, Joe is sure Capel didn't know anything about Tiny's situation.

Capel hired Oronde because of his ability to recruit and connections with aau coaches/handlers. OU didn't land any of the guys they originally wanted in the late signing period and I think it has to do with Oronde getting fired.

I hope Jeff didn't know what Oronde was doing but I doubt it. It is Jeff's program and ultimately he is responsible for his assistants actions.

I have no idea why this is so hard for people? At this point, the assistant in question is gone, the player in question is gone and there is nothing directly connecting Jeff Capel to any of whatever "this" is, yet we have otherwise intelligent posters, newspaper writers and sports talk hosts predicting armageddon for OU Basketball, making huge presumptions about Jeff Capel and his involvement (or even more laughable, presenting "no win" statements of if he knew he should be canned, and if he didn't know he should be canned).

Suffice to say, I expect that from the media hacks in Oklahoma because it is a slow news cycle, never expected that so many "fans" of OU would be pushing the same nonsense. Really, I think that most OU fans are really football fans that have a passing interest in basketball that only shows up when we are either really good, or really bad.

I don't think this is worse the the Kelvin Sampson scandal - at least not what we know. One is that Kelving was the offending cell phone caller, not just an assistant. At this point there is no tangible or strongly suggestive evidence that Jeff Capel was in on this. If such evidence comes out, he will have a hard time surviving this situation.

Let's just hope there are no smoking guns uncovered during this investigation that points to significantly more and sustained payments to players. That is my big fear in all of this....

The Kansas City Star reported the following on the $3,000 and Tiny's explanation of what the money was for. I apologize if this has already been posted:

Oklahoma opened an investigation after celebrity gossip site TMZ.com reported Gallon had taken a $3,000 wire transfer from a Florida financial advisor. He said the money was owed to his high school, Oak Hill Academy. Gallon said it was required to release his transcript.

"They weren't going to release it until we paid what we owed," Gallon said. "We got the money, and my mom paid that money back. I don't know what happened after that."

Can you give a link to that article Scrybe?

Nevermind found the article.

I think it's worse because in the eyes of the NCAA it's worse to have a coach, assistant or head, to arrange for financial arrangements for a player than it is to exceed the amount of phone calls to a recruit. Quite frankly, I don't care whether Jeff knew or did not know the circumstances, it's still our team's ass. I'm a fan of OU, I want us to do well. Regardless of whether Jeff Capel knew or not, we WILL get the hammer if it turns out this is true. That's what I care about. It's not like the NCAA rule is "if the head coach didn't know that an assistant was arranging for $3000 to pay his prep school, then the program gets no sanctions."

No, but the sanctions will be less if Capel was not involved.

Is it really better if our coach is completely clueless about how his assistants and players work? I think that would be a pretty sad indictment on our coach. Especially for a coach that is supposedly a recruiter first, which is how many of our fans discribe him. I'm not sure he's that good a recruiter because of the actual history of his recruits. But it looks worse for Capel if he knew nothing about how his players got here.

That is an silly suggestion. Bosses cannot possibly know everything their subordinates are doing.

IF you have ever been a boss, you cannot possibly know the truth of this statement. But if you want to take that stance as correct, where is the outcry to have Boren's and Castiglione's jobs as well? After all Capel, Kelvin and Stoops were their subordinates, right?

Exactly! I think we need to go after the regents as well. Why the heck didn't they know about the money transfer? They MUST have been asleep at the switch.

You are right Mr. B...only someone who has never been a department head/boss would make such an asinine statement.

Well if you have ever worked for a boss you should know that too. I have never been a boss, but half the time my boss has to ask me what I have been working on because he is to busy with his job. It would be real easy for me to lie to him if i was that type of employee. That comes down to hiring people you can trust which Jeff is trying to do with his next 2 coaches

Don't forget the Governor, I mean after all, the buck stops with him....wait, he is an aggie, now it is STARTING TO ADD UP!

Here is what I have finally figured out, there are about 5-10 posters on here that wait for ANY reason to paint Capel as an imbecile, it is what it is. He is crooked if he knew and clueless if he didn't, either way he should be gone.

Well Since we elected the Governor then ultimately the buck stops with all of us
