It seemed to me that we always spend most of the first quarter fighting to get ahead. Felt we came out throwing up a number of treys and missing them then settle down to a more disciplined offense and start hitting the treys. Also felt that we usually finished the game strong and that we always have in the Baranczyk era.
So I looked into the stats all by individual quarter. Did shooting stats and scoring by quarter vs our opponents scoring by quarter. Evaluated total season to date, first 7 games vs last 6 games and isolated the games against our top four opponents (UCLA, Florida State, North Carolina State and Oklahoma State) all of which could well be top 25 teams.
My conclusion is that we do struggle early in games, but usaully finish the first quarter strong. We are clearly a second half team and we have improved over the last six games which include the Florida State, North Carolina State and Oklahona State teams. Evidence of our conditioning is starkly revealed in the improvement in 3 point shooting in the last 6 games (42.6 % vs 18.5% in the first 7). Three point shooting depends a lot on how fresh the legs are. You may have noted how some of the teams we play start the game hot from three but miss a lot late in the game. I think our improvment in three point shooting also has a lot to do with the development of Smith .421 from 3, Vann (.400), Tolan (.500) and Stewart (.333).
I think we are ready to compete with South Carolina, Texas and LSU but not sure we can beat them. But I think we are close. Following is some of the detail the stats revealed.
For the first 13 games we have scored the most points (326) in the first quarter but score over 300 in all 4 quarters. Our lowest scoring quarter is the second (301)
Our opponents have scored the most (211) in the first quarter, but only 173 in the fourth quarter. We have outscored our 13 oponents by over 35 poinst a game.
Our field goal shooting is above 45% each quarter with the second quarter the highest (51.44%) with the third quarter the lowest (45.6)
Our 3 point shooting ranging from 32.26 in the 4th quarter to 35.44 in the first quarter. We have outscored our oponents by 35.46 points a game.
There are expected differences in the games against our top 4 opponents. We have only out scored them by 9.5 points a game and we are outscored by 2.5 points in the first two quarters but outscore them 12 in the final two quarters, Our field goal performance is 48.86% for the season and 46.53% against the top opponents. Our 3 point shooting is at 33.55% for the full season vs 30.77% against our top opponents.
In comparing out first 7games with the last 6 the field goal Percentage is 46.20% for the first 7 games vs 46.00% in the last 6. We improved our 3 point shooting by 5.7% in the last 6 games. We outscored our apponents by more than 32 pointd both periods with less than 1 point more in the last 6 games where we averaged 101.5 points a game
