What are the guys doing this summer? Have all the recruits checked in? What are the permissable contacts between players and coaches in the summertime?

While not directly answering your questions about OU's summer of 2017, here is some general information. Because of a new NCAA rule enacted a few years ago, coaches are allowed to workout with their players for eight hours a week, including two on the court, if the athletes are enrolled in summer school or have met certain academic benchmarks.

(EXCERPT)

The measure, adopted by the NCAA's board of directors, says, "In men's basketball, a student-athlete who is enrolled in summer school may engage in required weight-training, conditioning and skill-related instruction for up to eight weeks (not required to be consecutive weeks). Participation in such activities shall be limited to a maximum of eight hours per week with not more than two hours per week spent on skill-related instruction. An individual who is not eligible to use the exception to summer school enrollment (Bylaw 17.1.6.2.1.1.4.1) may participate only during the period of the institution's summer term or terms (opening day of classes through last day of final exams) in which he is enrolled."

They have two 1-hour practices every week. If you call Mike Sheperd, he will say they aren't open for the public, but they really are. If you go, they give you a sheet outlining every drill and for how long at each practice. It's very efficient and organized. After practice the players come over and thank you for attending..... even some of the coaches do, too. The only problem is finding out the day and time for each of those practices.

The few I've gone to have about 5-10 fans watching, and some of those guys go to almost every practice. The players even know them by name. It's really fun to watch.

If you go, tell Paul, Jerry, and Joe that Matthew says hello.
