Terryn Milton almost didn’t know how to respond.

Sitting on a couch at The Oklahoman’s video studio Wednesday, a former opponent was completely unaware of Milton’s older brother.

“You don’t know who Shake is?” Milton asked, showing her disbelief.

Putnam West’s Ce’Nara Skanes quickly learned Shake had starred at Owasso and SMU. He had declared for this year’s NBA Draft. She then admitted she doesn’t watch much college or pro basketball.

But she knew all about Terryn. The entire state now knows Terryn.

Owasso’s senior guard finally became more than the younger sibling of a possible NBA player, leading Owasso to the Class 6A state championship for the first time in 28 years. Milton is The Oklahoman’s Super 5 Player of the Year.

“I’ve always been known as, ‘Shake’s little sister,’ so making my own name for myself as Terryn Milton was pretty big to me,” Milton said. “He wanted me to do that and my whole family wanted me to do that. It’s pretty big for me.”

Milton was the key to Owasso’s title run, averaging a team-high 11.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, four assists and 2.2 steals. In the state tournament, she was the most consistent player, coming up with a big basket or defensive stop as needed.

But her season easily could have been derailed before it got going.
During a preseason practice, Milton felt something wrong in her hip when she landed from a jump. Doctors at the emergency room found no breaks.
Her hip did not appear to be getting better.

Finally, an MRI revealed a fracture in her hip. Surgery was possible, but she elected to let it heal without medical intervention. After a period on crutches, she worked her way back by the sixth game of the season, the Tournament of Champions title game in December.

Owasso was 3-2 at the time. It lost just once with Milton on the floor.
“Well, we got a lot better,” Owasso coach Matt Sweeney said. “She just brings a lot of calmness to the team. She’s very calm on the court and takes care of business, gets us in offense and defense.”

Milton gets that from growing up with her brother.

They each wanted to be known on and off the court. That took time, but as each improved it was obvious their talent level.

Shake’s senior season was dynamic. Terryn was then a freshman and as she matured she looked more and more like her brother on the court.

But Terryn remained determined to make her own way. She signed with Texas-Arlington, fully aware Shake was at nearby SMU but likely headed to the NBA.

It’s her turn to make people know her name.

“She’s her own person, but I see a lot of similarities,” Sweeney said. “It was very fun to watch Shake play and it was very fun to watch her play as well.”
