The Good
- Win #1 for Lon Kruger in his Sooner debut as head coach. He was out before the game shaking every student's hand that had arrived early to the LNC. He stayed after the game to celebrate a kid's birthday party at the LNC. He is doing all the right things right now to engrain himself into this community and IF he wins here, I am positive that the city will rally around them like they do Sherri Coale. Glad you are one of us, Coach Kruger.
- Romero Osby - Many of you heard that Roe's grandfather passed away this past week and RJ Young of the OUDaily wrote a great piece on Osby's upbringing. Osby showed us why he got such high remarks from the past coachings staff and from his teammates last year. The guy played hard on both ends and really let the game come to him. You can tell that he fits in really well with what Kruger wants and needs in his pressure man defense. I think what impressed me the most about his night (which included a double-double and several key blocks) was his passing ability from the baseline.
- PG play - Grooms and Blair both did a great job of distributing the basketball and creating good shots against a stingy Bengal's zone. The problem was not with the Sooners not getting good shots against the zone, but rather making those shots. Grooms especially did an excellent job penetrating and kicking. If the shots had fallen then this would have been a different night.
- Puma Time - Big Barry came in and made his presence felt with timely blocks, a big jumper, and most importantly- blocking out on the defensive end.
The Bad -
- Closing out shooters in the halfcourt - I'm not sure why the Sooners had such a problem with this on Friday night, but it was much worse than during the two exhibition games and reminded me far too much of what we have been subjected to as fans during the past two plus seasons. Grooms, Neal, and Blair all need to do a much better job of getting a hand up and running out on shooters in order to have an affect on their shots.
- FT shooting down the stretch - I bragged about FT shooting being a strength of this squad this seasona and I stand by that, but both Cam and Blair missed key, key FTs down the stretch that should have iced that game. Can't get away with that in the Big 12 as it will cut out any chance that we have of winning a close game.
- Cam's right hand - Tough, tough shooting night for Cameron Clark. It was probably the worst I've seen from him. We need him to forget about it and come out firing on Friday.
The Ugly
- Their 7-4 center pulling an abdominal muscle right after he raised his hands in disgust after an official's call.
- Calvin hanging on the rim, drawing a T, and almost seriously injuring himself. "C'mon man!"
- Tyler Neal's first 5 game minutes. Glad he overcame and ended up having an acceptable game, but man, those frist 4 possessions were especially poor. He has got to do better.
From all accounts, the 4,300 plus that attended last week had a good time and this team plays hard and is fun to watch with its intense fullcourt defense and unselfish style. Hope that all those folks will be back and that you on OUHoops.com will do your part to get some folks to the LNC this Friday as we take on the always enteraining Fang Mitchell and his Coppin State squad.
