The Oklahoman and NewsOK.com ranked among the nation's top 10 newspaper websites for the fourth consecutive year of The Associated Press Sports Editors Web contest, the organization announced Thursday.

The Oklahoman is among five papers in the largest classification (over 2 million unique visitors per month) that have placed in the top-10 all four years of the contest. The others: the New York Daily News, New York Times, USA Today and Washington Post.

The sites were judged over two dates, randomly selected by the contest chair, said Tim Stephens, first vice president of APSE and deputy managing editor for CBSSports.com. Judges selected a top 10 in each category as well as honorable mentions. Other papers winning top-10 designations in the largest classification were the Chicago Tribune, Denver Post, Kansas City Star, Los Angeles Times and Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

"The most rewarding thing about the top-10 website honor is that it's an acknowledgment of the talent, teamwork and commitment of everyone who plays a role in serving sports fans on NewsOK," said Mike Sherman, sports editor for The Oklahoman.

The Oklahoman's fourth straight top-10 finish in the APSE web contest follows the newspaper's 2011 accomplishments, in which it was one of four papers nationwide to place in APSE's top 10 for daily, Sunday, special sections and websites. The others were The New York Times, The Boston Globe and Omaha World-Herald.

What's the criteria to crack the Top 10? User interface? Quality content from staff? Combination of both?

What's the criteria to crack the Top 10? User interface? Quality content from staff? Combination of both?

Good question.

Three of the officers for the organization are editors at papers with long winning streaks (USA Today, the Oklahoman and a paper in Tuscaloosa). I suspect when your sports editor is a vice president of the organization giving the award, you've got a good chance to win.

More info on the organization ... On Saturday, April 24, 2010 Associated Press Sports Editors Red Smith Hall of Fame was unveiled in the Student Media Center inside the Indiana University Purdue University-Indianapolis Campus Center in downtown Indianapolis.

I would certainly rank the Oklahoman's sports page as one of the ten best in the state of Oklahoma.

Well, you're a little more optimistic than I!
