The Women's Game is the Key to Fixing the Men - Jason Whitlock

I think they have to start with officiating. I've said officiating in men's AND women's D1 game is atrotious! Some Big 12 men's coaches and some administrators are talking about it needs to be fixed and another article brings up the differences in calling games in regular season versus post season, which I, and I think anyone that watches college basketball, have noticed.

Officiating in both games is astonishingly poor, but that in the women's game is really embarrassing.

If you give the women 5 years of eligibility, most colleges are going to be paying for graduate school and that's more expensive for schools that are already in the red.

Yeah, but they're paying themselves - it's not like it's real money.

Not at Oklahoma, if my understanding of the situation is correct. The Athletic Department is totally separate from the academic side of the university.
So we think the Athletic Department is paying the University regular graduate school tuition rates for Whitney this year - and real money is flowing from one to the other? Pardon me if I'm somewhat skeptical about that.

I'm just shocked that Porkchop wrote an article chronicling an issue in sports without bringing up race.

Every time I mention someone redshirting I'm told that girls don't want to hang around 5 years, they just want to get on with their lives...now they are talking about a possible 6th year?!?!

I think I read an article once that said that some schools just write off the tuition for scholarship athletes and others actually pay it. OU was one of the once that actually pay it. Also - doesn't that money come from the endowments for women's basketball?

But, I don't think they would all want to play for 5 years, even if they could.

But it does make for interesting discussion.

I find it odd that schools would worry about money with the way they have no issues scheduling trips all over the place as well as a seemingly bottomless budget whenever they seem to need it.

Oh, yeah, I forgot about the endowments.

Maybe if they could have a redshirt year and still have another one for injury, they might consider it.

Of all the suggestions, I think moving the whole season up a month and having the whole women's tournament after the men's may be an idea whose time has come. Along those lines, I've heard coaches talk before about the advantages that would come if basketball could be a one semester sport.

Amen!

Although cutting out the conference tournaments would help some, under Whitlock's plan, some teams would be playing additional 13 games (if I understand his plan) during the post season. That is a lot of games and a lot of nights in hotel rooms and away from school for the girls.

I think with that part of the plan, Whitlock went one step too far. Does the single elimination tournament always end up with the best team as champion? Certainly not. If it did, it would be a dull tournament indeed.

I believe it. Higher education is all about money and where they can get the most of it. They are tagging football tickets with academic enhancement fees. Donations to the university determine how many OU-Texas and bowl tickets you can buy. Everything in the stadium and the buildings surrounding it is named after people who donate money. It would not surprise me to see the restrooms in the upper deck eventually named in memory of someone.

I have not the vaguest idea what to think about most of this. This (these) proposals change the entire nature of the game, and I don't know that anything would be implemented that way. If anything does occur, it is likely to be one thing at a time to see how it works.

The observation that the NCAA goes where the money is probably is accurate. But, we did see some rather interesting developments when the college presidents made their stand during the sanctions on Penn State. I don't remember that hammer ever coming down before.

I don't see double elimination coming. Does the opportunity for an upset of a heavily-favored team add to or detract from the marketing of a product?

It would be special, though:

Baylor 72, Stanford 49
Baylor 88, Stanford 65

I'm thrilled already. When does it start?

My husband likes to say that in those type of games, you root for the terrorists.

See what I did there? You can't hate me because I said MY HUSBAND said it, not me. Hell, I didn't even say that I agree with him, I was just saying it because HE said it.

Now... what were we discussing again?
