This staff can't teach Defensive or Grit or Pride

I am not sure why this is the case but for the last 5 years with the exception of Blake G's intense Manhood for 1 1/2 years this program plays skirt ball. This program's lack of defense, grit and pride is about as low as any progam can get. We went from a top 15 program year in and year out under the previous coach to skirt ball and moral victories. "We only lost to UK by 12" That is the highlight of the season so far.

These OU teams walk out on the court and remind me of a Harlem Globetrotters paid rival. Small, weak, meek and expecting to lose games against all decent teams.

I am starting to wonder if the problem was not Tiny, Fitz, Warren and our McD's superstar point guard prospect. Did these guys shut down because they knew early on that they made a huge mistake coming to OU and playing for this staff? I believe all these guys would still be here under the previous coaching staff and we would be a top 15 program like most years.

I don't think Capel knows that defense is part of basketball.

We only gave up 68 pts in this game. It's not like we went to Maui and gave up 100 pts all three games. Our defense is mediocre, but other than Cade, nobody can score. We have many problems.

My biggest gripe with Capel so far this year is the way he substitutes. My biggest grip with him last year was that he didnt take out TMG and WW when they were putting out no effort. I had no gripes with him in 2006-2009.

But defense is not our only problem.

You win with hardnosed D unless you play skirt ball. These teams score at will when they want to. They don't have to score any more to whip us. If they needed to score more they would, we pose zero threat.

We dont have much defense but then we dont have ANY talent with the possible exception of Clark and a bit from Fitz and a hard worker journeyman in Cade. Other than that we are BEREFT of talented players. Thompson need to sit until garbage time (if we have any of that.)

You only win with hard-nosed D if you have tough athletes, of which we have none. I'm sorry but if it was as simple as deciding one day "I'm gonna play hard-nosed defense and rebound like a madman" no one would know who Dennis Rodman was. There have been tens of thousands of better athletes than Rodman over the past 20 years in this country, but none have done what he did because they weren't tough enough mentally and they didn't have the will. Not sure how much of that you can teach. Capel doesn't have the players or the ability to get that from them right now.

He can't teach it I am pretty certain of that fact. Sampson made sure you did it or you didn't play. Sampson made you tough and hard-nosed. Capel seems to a mild mannered very nice chapn his teams take on that personality. Unless you have better talent its a loser way to play. I call it skirt ball.

I think the thread title says everything on my mind. Thank you, Buttermaker, for getting to the heart of the matter quickly.

For those that say the problem is just as big on the offensive side of the ball; yes, we have little talent. We have enough athletic ability, however, to play defense. Unfortunately, we don't have anyone teaching it and demanding it. We could be competitive if that were not the case; and we would not lose to DII schools that won't even be competitve in DII.

You want to say we held them to less than 70? By that logic we must also conclude that Chaminade is as good as Kentucky on the defensive side of the ball.
