I read the other day that players fall into three categories:

1. Players who win you games

2. Players who won't get you beat

3. Players who lose you games

I had never really seen players categorized in three simple groups but it makes sense. Obviously, as a coach, you don't want to have anyone on the roster who falls into group #3. The goal should be to have as many as possible in group #1.

The main problem with this team is that we have too many category 2 players and not enough category 1 players.

Interesting. My daughters college coach told me he classified players into 3 groups as well.

1. Starters

2. Players who can relieve starters

3. Practice players

Trying to categorize players makes no sense to me.

I agree. But, I do think next year we will have 1 or maybe 2 more category 1 players.

I've talked to many coaches who say they have plenty of role players (Category #2) but not enough players (Category #1)

Role players and practice players are much needed but you have to have special kids that can make plays that win games.

Probably the difference between UCONN and the rest is that they have 5 in category 1.

1. I think Whitney and Maddie may have been in the #1 category, and I hope that Maddie returns in that capacity. I had thought that Aaryn was in that category until this year.

2. I think that winning is often a refrain from doing things that get you beat. A team of #2s would be difficult to beat. UConn probably has two or three #1s, but is mostly #2s. Geno doesn't beat you as often as he doesn't lose to you. He lets you beat yourself. Brianna beats you.

I watched Iowa beat Penn State last night. Lucas of Penn State is a tremendous player. Iowa had two that stood out, Disterhof (a freshman) and the point from Racine. They were good teams, and they played well together. But, they didn't play defense with the intensity that we see it in the Big Twelve, nor were they that intent on offensive rebounding. It made me wonder if they could be forced into errors by a harsh defense, making a lot of them into #3s.

Ortiz has been wining games for her coach all season, hopefully it will translate to college.

I can't remember another player OU has ever had like Gabbi. I can't wait to see her play this fall.
