which is now the halfway point in Big 12 play (weird) we are 3-6. The last time an OU team started this poorly in conference play was in 1981. The good news is that it was Billy Tubbs' first year and OU and things turned out alright with him.

Hopefully we are better than 3-6 the next 9 games. Lord knows we can't finish much worse than we did the past 2 years.

But to put it in perspective, here's is OU's record through 9 conference games in the last 10 years.

2008 - 9-0
2002 - 7-2
2004 - 6-3
2005 - 6-3
2006 - 5-4
2003 - 5-4
2007 - 4-5
2009 - 4-5
2010 - 4-5
2011 - 3-6 (this season)

I would enjoy seeing how many ranked teams we played in the first 9 games each of those years. We've played 6 this year. Can't imagine we've played that many in previous years.

We have it much easier the rest of the season. I bet 5-4 is the worst we go.

The Big 8 in Tubbs first year was a terrible basketball conference, absolutely terrible. Mizzou was good, but KU and KSU were decent and the rest were about like Tech is this year. So, comparing this year to that year is apples to oranges.

Like I said the last time you did a comparison post, you can't forget the fact the 2 worst basketball programs in the conference who were members last year are not members this year (Neb and Col). Also, the conference has 3 top 10 teams for the first time in a long time. This is a good basketball conference and we are getting better.

If you are looking to judge success by comparing it to last year or 2 years ago when you can't really compare the 2, then you are going to be disappointed.

At this point we are exactly where I predicted we would be. Winning in Manhattan made up for the OSU loss. Although I predicted we would sweep ISU and UT and I'm not confident that will hold true. But there is a lot to look forward too with this team and I'm excited about the future of OU hoops.

2003 jumps at me the most... That team finished with a conference tournament championship, #1 seed, and an Elite 8 appearance, yet started 5-4? Crazy.

Not at all. Look at UConn last year(not conparing us to them of course).

Eh, looking at the schedules like this tells me nothing. Apples and oranges. Different opponents, different teams in the conference, and difference players at OU. We've already played 4 games against the top 3 teams in the conference.

Our record may or may not reflect it, but this is a better team, and better coached team than we've had the last few years. Of that I'm sure.

Looking at the first 9 games we've had to play ranked teams KSU and Kansas twice. Go to ranked Missouri and played ranked Baylor at home. Going into conference play I would think most here would say 1-4 against ranked teams is good. We went 2-3 that's pretty good. We also went to Stillwater and lost, went to A&M and lost a close game. We only played 1 home game against a non-ranked team in Texas Tech. Yes you can argue we should have beat an OSU or A&M on the road because they aren't that good but winning on the road in a major conference isn't easy. Especially with the level we are at right now. If we go 3-6 the rest of the year I'll be really disappointed.

But the schedule the rest of the year gets really easy. Only 2 games against ranked teams. We have to go to Austin and to Waco and play Missouri at home. @ Ames is a game I can see us losing but every other game is one we'll be favored. That's 5-4 the rest of the year which isn't all that bad. If we find a way to win one of the four we aren't favored in we have a good shot at 9 wins.

Agree. We are better this year.

2003=2003-04, the NIT year with Drew Lavender.

I believe he was referring to the 2002-03 season when he said the '03 Sooners won the conference tourney and received a #1 seed. And he was right. Of course, the Sooners of the previous year (2001-02) were a better team and deserving of a 1-seed. The didn't get it, but they did go to the Final Four. According to Sampson, they were the best team in America that year.

If Quannas doesn't get that ankle injury they probably win the Title that year, that was an amazing team.
