Tony Mitchell ruled Ineligible at Mizzou

Mizzou has already released a statement about this. Mitchell will not be able to enroll at Mizzou for this semester. The deadline was August 30. Cheno is right that it's not an NCAA issue, though. It varies from school to school (see: Markieff and Marcus Morris enrolling more than two weeks after classes began in 2008).

Just another example where KU outsmarts Mizzou.

Cheno, I think you're wrong on some of the academic fraud details, though. The kansas assistants the NCAA found guilty of providing test answers to recruits weren't helping with the ACT or SAT. They were correspondence courses juco players needed to graduate. That is what you're talking about, right?

Nope talking about Mizzou hiring a guy to physically go take the ACT/SAT tests for Mizzou players. Outrageous.

Except the NCAA didn't catch that when it happened over 20 years ago.

Sometime we're pretty hard on Jeff Capel. I remember last year complaining about Capel not recruiting Mitchell, but obviously he and OU's compliance staff knew things we didn't. Same can be said about other recruits that he passed on.

Good point. You know if a top 20 guy signs with Mizzou there has to be some baggage. Looking at his Scout page he didn't have any of the big boys after him.

Don't know how much that played into it. He already had a commitment from a highly rated player at the same position, and at the time he wasn't expecting to have nearly as many spots as he did.

Had Capel known he'd be signing so many players, I bet he would've been more open to recruiting Mitchell (not like Newell's academic past was great, either).

I doubt they knew anything but Mitchell was a risk... which everyone already knew.

just want to emphasize this. mitchell was known to have a poor chance of qualifying. end of story. he doesn't have any "baggage". he's a really good guy.

We're talking college basketball here.....so having a poor chance of qualifying is "baggage". I don't doubt he's a good guy...but if you can't qualify it's a problem.
