Transfer Portal 2027

Will this truncate the bottom half teams or the top half teams or split?

Are we going to see 16v16, 16v16, 16v16, 16v16 and 11v11, 11v11, 11v11, 11v11 and 12v12, 12v12, 10v10, 10v10???

First 12? 24 teams of the 76 being featured in that Dayton Ohio section? (assuming split to two more sites)

(I admit I haven't read the reading on it)

Let's do 76 best teams, random draw every round.

First round - Bottom 24 teams random draw
Second round - Remaining 64 teams random draw
etc.

The extra spots will largely go to crappy power conference teams in all likelihood (I see you, Porter Moser!). 12 games on the Tuesday and Wednesday.

There's barely any upsets anymore. CBB isn't close to what it once was and they still thought this was a good idea?
Their only consideration for “good idea” is does it make more money. If yes, then they do it. It doesn’t matter if it destroys the game or fan interest as long as they can squeeze out another dollar.

NIL and revenue sharing killed that aspect of the tournament.

High Point spent $4M on their roster this past season. That is much more than what the rest of the teams in their conference spent, but is a pittance compared to what the Power conference schools spend. Still, they beat Wisconsin in the first round.

The days of a mid-major winning more than one game in the tournament are pretty much over.

I'm coming around on the 76 team tournament. The first Tuesday and Wednesday will be more fun.

I am stridently against expansion because there simply aren't enough deserving teams to remotely justify adding eight teams, but fan interest in the sport is very high right now and the level of play throughout the college game is at an all time high because more good players stay in school due to NIL. And I always have loved the tourney in part because of the upsets and unpredictability, but on the other hand, it isn't necessarily an awful thing if the best teams are really good and you end up with a bunch of elite teams playing in the last couple weekends. I mean, in every other sport, pro and college, people get very excited when you have great matchups late in the playoffs/tournament. No one complains if the two best teams in each conference make the conference/league championship games/round in pro sports, or if four really good teams make the semis of the football playoff.

Like I said, I hate the idea of expanding the tourney. But I am not convinced the lack of upsets will necessarily be an annual thing, just because strange things happen in a one-and-done event. But if the Elite 8 and Sweet 16 see fewer longshots, it doesn't suck watching really good teams compete at that stage of the tourney.

I just noticed Tyler Hendricks is now rated a 4 star in the ON3 rankings. He also moved up in the 247 rankings. Thought that was interesting...seems like a solid bench piece.

As far as the tourney expanding....I'd rather it stay at 64. Expanding it kind of waters down the accomplishment of simply making the tourney. But, I love more college b-ball, so on the positive side, it does give us that.

unless ou is playing...i don't watch until the sweet 16.
so the ncaa can do whatever it wants. they can expand to 300. i still won't watch.
no doubt crup moser is a happy man upon hearing that news.

I’m also against expansion, but you’d think if the level of play is up so much that the bubble would be stronger unless your statement is solely about W/L records and not about overall quality of the teams on the bubble.

NIL has obviously helped with overall talent retention in college basketball. That really can’t be debated. But not so much from a level of play standpoint overall imo. I think the sport is becoming really top heavy, which is partly why we’re seeing fewer upsets & Cinderella runs. The top maybe 30 programs are able to retain and add key pieces in a given year. Largely, everyone else is basically starting over and without the continuity, even though talent at a particular program fluctuates more than ever, the level of play is taking a hit. The mid-major programs are taking a major hit.

We’ve seen extremely talented teams lose to teams that play good basketball for years. It’s just harder to cultivate culture, familiarity, & mastery of a system with so much roster turnover.

Fair point, I could have worded that better. There is much more talent in the sport than there was before NIL, but you're right to note that it is mostly benefitting the better programs. The bubble was awful this year and has been in other recent years, which is why I say there aren't enough worth teams to merit adding eight additional at large spots from a competition standpoint.

It would be interesting to compare the quality of, say, this year's OU roster to the talent of a bubble team 10 or 20 years ago from a pure talent standpoint, to see if NIL has had a trickle down effect to teams well outside the top of the sport. But obviously when the committee is selecting the field in a given year, that isn't relevant.

I will no longer be watching the tourney as closely as I always have my entire life. My interest in college sports generally is already on life support..
