I really hope Emig is reaching here.

I'm not sure how you bring in a kid for a visit who has eligibility questions, especially when it is such a big need after losing a key player to transfer.

But because of all of the moving, as well as some personal issues that arose along the way, McLean's academic situation in terms of NCAA Division I eligibility have come into question.
Asked if OU was cautiously optimistic about McLean's issues being resolved, one source said: "Probably more cautious than optimistic."

Ouch. Me too. If he doesn't qualify really going to put us in a bind.

The kid has to go through the NCAA clearing house to confirm his eligibility. Stoops has that circumstance with players routinely.

I'm sure the staff has know exactly where they were on this deal all along.

McLean just tweeted this. He doesn't seem concerned about it:

@Young_Bull4: Back in the Big Apple. Thank you for your great hospitality OU. I'll be back rather SOONER than later.

All he has to do is graduate from juco, right?

His high school stuff is irrelevant at this point.

I think there's also some concern as to whether he would have 1 or 2 years of eligibility remaining. One year left might actually be better so we can have an extra scholarship next year and fill a need this year.

I agree. Kruger has been doing this too long to be caught with his pants down on an eligibility issue for a position we absolutely have to have. McClean will be here.

Depends on how good the kid is. If he's just a stop gap, Omar Leary type player, than yeah, one year would probably be best. But '15-'16 is the year to make a run for Kruger. And if this kid is good, we want that 24 year old 5th year senior on the roster for that run.

Best I can tell is that he played at Moberly in 2011-12 as a freshman, which means he spent three total years at the juco level. However, there is no mention in the link in this thread for stats in his first year at Westchester.

My assumption is that he didn't play that year, which means he has two years left.

Yeah, it's the missing year that nobody really seems to know about...
So, he graduated high school in 2010, went to prep school for a year, then played at Moberly for a year, then ??? for a year, then played at Westchester for a year to get us to here.

Here's an article on Gio the summer after he graduated from HS in 2010. It said he had to attend prep school which would have taken a year, and that means he has messed with juco for 3 years, but may have redshirted a year in there.

Anyway, the article says some nice things about his game especially on offense. Here are some excerpts:

McLean, 19, is one of the best young players on the New York City streetball circuit, playing against men more than a decade older than him. Brown, the Dyckman Youth Enterprises programs supervisor. “That’s why I think out of the many guys that we have playing in our tournament, he has the most upside at the guard position. He’s only 19 years old and he’s already establishing himself amongst the men. He can play basketball.”

His offensive game is electric, with nifty ball handling and consistent spot-up shooting. His relentless hustle earned him the nickname “Batteries Not Included.” But his best attribute is his upside....... “Meeting the right people turned me into an offensive machine.”

This past winter at Bronx Regional, McLean was dominant. The 5-foot-10 guard averaged 21.8 points and 5.6 assists per game. His shooting touch was also on full display. He made 25 3-pointers in eight regular-season games and shot an incredible 31-of-33 from the free-throw line.

This is an in-depth interview with Gio. He evidently hurt his knee his freshman year at Moberly juco and sat out a year rehabbing it before transferring to Westchester last year.

Here's another article on his recruitment. No doubt he has "been around". His Westchester team lost in the 1st round of the national juco tourney in Hutchinson KS but he scored 34 in that 101-99 2 OT loss and that put him on the recruiting radar. In that game, he played 48.5 of the 50 minutes and was 13-20 from the floor, 3-7 from deep, 5-9 on free throws, had 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal, and 2 TO's.
