I didn't have anything to do so I checked Derek Peterson's twitter to see if he had watched any practices. He posted a lot of good updates during the season. Sadly he's leaving to take a job covering Nebraska football ..... but I stumbled across a post from Kevin Kruger.

Evidently, Khadeem Lattin made 88 straight 3-pointers in a shoot-around before missing 2 in a row. The very next day Christian James hit 93 in a row. Coach Hartman then tweeted a challenge to Trae, McGusty, and Lazenby to see if they can match it.

That's just crazy. The team is obviously putting in a lot of hard work.

It encourages me to hope James has rediscovered his shooting touch. Even though he has obviously sculpted his body in the off-season, I also hope he has regained his quickness.

Wow! Khadeem and Christian put on quite a show from behind the arc.

I'm hoping that's a sign of more to come from CJ. He could be an important piece of the puzzle this season if he finds his stroke again.

Those are numbers I might expect from Buddy. What miracle pill did they take in the off season? To go from where they were at the end of last season to this is hardly credible . Wonder what they could do if guarded in a game.

Look, I'm not saying it's not EXTREMELY impressive, and by saying this I'm not trying to be a downer. But last year I watched some of these same guys in warmups and they were knocking down shot after shot after shot. All I'm saying is when it's in game and bullets are flying, it's completely different, obviously. But again those numbers are incredible and I hope they are much improved..

If anybody can do it guarded in a game they will be the greatest shooter of all time & it wouldn't be close. This reall surprises me about Lattin, wonder if they meant free throws.

Not 88 in a row. Just 88 total before missing 2 in a row. But still impressive

I would argue that nobody on the team has more to prove this season than Lattin and James. I expect them both to play very well.

Most of the players have sculpted bodies. We will be stronger and quicker than last year.
If shooting and defense improve significantly, we could surprise a lot.

Thanks for the clarification, I was wondering how that was remotely possible and read it wrong initially. I've watched great shooters go for steaks, and Lattin isn't making 88 in a row. Still very impressive and improbable, if not miraculous.

It may not have been 88 and 93 in a row, but I'm guessing it was out of 100 shots. Both Kevin Kruger and Carlin Hartman acted like it was special, and Hartman challenged Trae, McGusty, and Lazenby to beat it in a subsequent tweet. Hartman commented it happened on back-to-back days.

The main thing I took out of it is Christian James may be rediscovering his outside shooting touch. I still remember he was named the best shooting guard in Texas his junior year of HS. I predict a big comeback year for him ...... which needs to happen for OU to have the kind of season we're all hoping for.

That's a good number.

Drill is called- Ray Allen Drill.

You count the number of 3's made before you miss 2 in a row. So you can miss 1 as long as you don't miss the next. Once you miss 2 in a row, drill is over.

A three-point attempt by Lattin is a shot, and time, wasted.

don't be surprised to see lattin make 30+ 3's this season

I'd love to be wrong, but I would be stunned if this actually happens. We hear all the time about players (not just OU players) making big improvements to their shot in the offseason and in practice, but translating that to games is a huge step. For him to make 30, he would probably have to shoot nearly three per game, and I don't think that is what is best for the offense. If he can consistently knock down 15-footers and display good shot selection, that will be just what the doctor ordered.

i would rather ou take close to 0 15 foot shots this season

and inside I agree with you. that FEELS correct doesnt it?

but modern basketball disagrees with us.

I always agreed with your philosophy above. a good 15 foot shot taken in rhythm is better than a 3 pt'er.

But then that logic was always based on shooting not much better than 35% of 3's consistently.

It was never considered that you incorporate 3's being made in place of bunnies also.

when you use quick plays and scenarios historically leading to layups for 3 pt'ers instead and drive those percentage numbers up a bit then it becomes more advantageous numerically to take the 3's.

and it is a fact that basketball is all about the numbers. tinkering with those percentages is what produces the most substantial effects on the game aside from just pure talent mismatch. when the talent level equalizes the numbers become HUGE.

and I have heard this exact topic come from both Abe Lemons as well as Don Haskins.

I agree Cool
A lot of bigs are making 3s. Think about how many open 3s Spangler turned down 2 years ago. If he made those at 40%, then you have the bonus points and a more open lane,

He turned them down his junior year and then I felt senior year he stretched the floor even more by becoming a better deep shooter. If Lattin can do that, then maybe I wouldn't mind him going 1-2/1-3 a game from deep. He just better not make it a habit of hanging out around that line lol
