unbelievable (isu related)

LOL wtf? I don't know what it is about Iowa State, but apparently you can go there and have minimal success and be rewarded (see Chizik)

He just abandoned his sinking ship, ISU was going down.

Agreed. And it's a good hire for Creighton, he's proven that he can be successful in that league. Don't know about that contract, though (if it's true, I only read the first post in that thread). It's not my money, I guess.

The contract is for about $900k annually, which is right around what Altman was making at Creighton and about $250k MORE than McDermott was making at Iowa State. It was an easy decision for McDermott, I'm sure... a 10 year contract and a $250k payraise, or get fired in a year?

I felt bad for Iowa State when I first heard about this... but apparently their fans are happy. If I were them, I'd probably prefer to ride out one more bad year and get a head start on the coaching search instead of trying to find someone this late in the game.

are you kidding? they're ecstatic. mcdermott was not going to be fired next year. he had a 2 million buyout and the ad had promised him at least 2 more years, with a good chance at 3.

the fans just had their prayers answered.

Didn't realize he had another 2-3 years there. In that case, they should be celebrating.

My sympathy was mostly based on the timing. It's too late for a new coach to make much of an imprint on the roster for next season, and they just got a commitment from a player today (Eric McKnight, a guy with offers from Mizzou, Maryland, Boston College, Indiana and Wake Forest, among others). In the long run, this is good for the program, but only if they're able to add a quality coach to replace him, and at this point that may be more difficult than it otherwise should be.

ISU will still suck no matter who their coach was. They really haven't been any good since Eustachey.

yeah, the timing is rough. it'll be interesting to see what they do.

i was shocked earlier today when they got mcknight. but presumably it won't hold up. interesting that mcdermott had the nerve to sign a guy (two actually) at the same time he was negotiating with another school.

The other commitment today probably will stick. It doesn't look like he had any other offers.

Yep, he just jumped ship and made a great career move.

I wonder who they can hire?

And we thought we were in bad shape for next year! Misery loves company I guess.

ISU has tremendous fan support and has had a history of being a very good program. The right hire ISU will be good again. I'd go after that N. Iowa coach. He already proved he can beat Kansas.

If I were ISU, I'd stay away from MVC coaches. Why hire the coach from Northern Iowa, when you hired his former boss (McDermott) and he was a colossal loser?

Altman will fail at Oregon for the exact same reason McDermott failed at ISU and the same reason Collier failed at Nebraska. Altman will continue to recruit the same kind of player he recruited to Creighton and he will win some games but never accomplish much in Eugene.

To McDermott's defense he had some legit talent but ran across some bad luck and not able to hold onto some.

Brackins- NBA player
Gilstrap- possible NBA player
W. Johnson- transferred from ISU to Syracuse and will be a top 5 pick

I agree it was a good move for McDermott but I'm not sure it was the best hire for Creighton. Creighton is actually a pretty good job. They were paying Altman more than a million a year so they have money and they also play in the 17,000 seat Qwest Center. Not many programs can claim to play in an arena that cost $290 million. Pretty impressive fan support as well, they average over 15,000 each game.

If I were Iowa State I think I would be calling these coaches and see if they have any interest. All of them have a proven track record of success.

Brian Gregory (Dayton) - Good coach in the A10, former Izzo assistant, recruits well, and is from the Mid-West.

Scott Sutton (Oral Roberts) - Has built a solid program and knows the Big 12.

Randy Bennett (St. Mary's) - Took over a program with 2 wins the entire year before he was hired and has built them into a consistent winning program. He's more of a west coast guy but has spent some time in the Mid-West. He was an assistant under Lorenzo Romar at SLU.

Chris Mooney (Richmond) - At 37 he is a young coach, won at Air Force and in 5 years has built a strong program at an A10 school in Richmond.

Billy Gillespie (Unemployed) - This would be like KSU hiring Bob Huggins. A sure thing on the court and a bit of a risky hire off the court. It worked out well for K-State so maybe it would for ISU. If he has gotten his drinking under control he could be a big splash hire for Iowa State. Even if he leaves after a few seasons of success he would most likely leave ISU in a better position then they are today. UTEP and A&M were both able to capitalize on what he started and continue winning after he left.
