UNC’s Roy Williams Retires

Too bad. Was hoping UNC would continue their downward spiral. Do not like that guy.

They may well continue a bit of a slide if they insist on staying within the Carolina family.

I've never really gotten the Williams hate, other than he used to coach at a rival in KU. Seems like a good man that cares about his players. I enjoyed the battles he and Kelvin had.

The hate is because he is a disingenuous and sanctimonious guy who has a history of turning in other schools to the NCAA when he loses recruiting battles.

The Weeper is about the most pompous, self-righteous guy you'll ever find in the profession. Egomaniac. Great coach though.

To say nothing of the fact that he oversaw the most egregious academic fraud I can ever recall in major college athletics......and got away with it!

bingo

I will give The Weeper this much...he has one major similarity to Bobby Knight. I might be slightly off (and it would only be slightly), but both guys won three National Championships despite only coaching (I believe) ONE PLAYER to play in an NBA All-Star game (Paul Pierce and Isiah Thomas). That's not easy to do...in any generation. Seriously, I can't think of one guy Williams coached at NC who played in an NBA All-Star game, yet won three titles there.

That's a pretty crazy stat. Does seem like a lot of his players at NC weren't really the type of guys that did much in the NBA.

It was similar at KU, right? He had a lot of talented guys, but like you said, only PP that did much in the NBA. Still remember that 2002 team. They were stacked. What OU did defensively to them in KC that year is still the best defensive performance I've ever seen out of a college basketball team.

The General and The Weeper are the antithesis of Dean Smith. No coach in the history of the game ever did less with more.

You may be right, but I will throw one name at you for Devil's Advocate sake - Digger Phelps. The guy was an amazing recruiter, but his teams only made it to the Final Four one time. While not as many NBA All-Stars as Dean Smith, he coached a lot more NBA talent than either The Weeper or The General.
