I watched this at the gym without sound. Why wasn't Arizona on the line when play stopped with about 27 seconds left?

After the 5 seconds call, what did the announcers say about the non-calls on Brown and Johnson?

It seemed to me that Brown got fouled twice if not three times on the drive. He clearly beat the Arizona player and then they guy bumped him hard on the side of his shoulder. Another Arizona player got him on the head, top of the shoulder and back going for a block and I thought the original defender (the earlier bump) got him again as he shot.

I also thought Johnson was fouled when he grabed the rebound and then fouled again when he went up for the final shot (that last one may have been after time expired).

Why in the world did Jordan Hamilton call timeout?

didn't anyone watch this game?

Arizona had the ball down two with about 35 seconds left (when I noticed it at the gym). Play stopped with less than 35 seconds left on what appeared to be a foul could (the ball was in the lane on a drible penetration). Coverage broke for a commercial. I assumed Texas called timeout to ice the shooter but when it came back, Arizona had an inbounds play. They then missed a shot, that led to the 5 second call, they make the shot and 1 free throw.

I would really like to know what happened at that point. I don't have sound on my computer at work so even if I find a clip, I won't get an explanation. Anyone that saw this and can explain to me what happened would be greatly appreciated.

I believe Ariz called timeout from the bench before the foul

I saw the end of this game. This am on the radio in KC they were talking about the "5" second violation. When I watched the game live, I thought they called it too fast--that the Texas player called time-out at about the 4 second mark. That was bad officiating.

Some of these games are coming down to the wire and the officiating is very important. For instance why in one game (the Butler game) do they call fouls at the end but in the Texas/Arizona game they did not? I agree with you that the Texas players were fouled, but no call.

ESPN ran a stop watch and the 5-second call was made at 4.76, I believe. That's real close, and at some point it is a judgement call by the official. Think the more important aspect everyone is overlooking is the terrible out of bounds play which was drawn up. Brown and Hamilton run to the corners (well Hamilton didn't run, more along the lines of a light jog), Gary Johnson (of all people) just stands there in space while Wangemen runs a fly pattern.

The Butler/Pitt ending, there were definitely two fouls there. Mack's was an obvious bump and Robinson blatantly hacked Howard. Why Pitt was even on the blocks for the second free throw is beyond me, great job Jamie Dixon.

The Arizona/UT game was a bit different, both calls were close...just didn't go Texas' way. I for one am happy b/c J'Covan Brown went to the line about six more times than he should have....and if you're going to complain about Brown getting fouled on the last shot, then you have to wonder about Williams' two possessions before. Thompson's arms are straight up, but as Williams turns to shoot, Thompson walks into his elbow. That's a foul.

i thought the SAME thing.

But Brown clearly beat the Arizona defender and he clearly checked him. That is a foul.

Later an Arizona guy comes from behind to swipe at the ball he gets his head, shoulder and body but no ball. That is a foul.

The original defender then gets him again.

regardless, how do you justify the guy being all over Johnson's back on the rebound. He fouled him. He was fouled again when he shot but the clock may have expired.

May problem with the late foul is they didn't call it. How can the official making the call possibly know if time has expired? He can't. He needs to make the call and look at the monitor. Had Johnson made the shot they would have gone to the monitor.

I did not watch the entire game but I think Texas got screwed at the end. Perhaps the rest of the game made up for it but the ending was tough.

I agree the out of bounds play was horrible. Plus the bench should have been counting and made the TO call at 3.5 seconds.

Jordan Hamilton calling timeout was terrible. Jocovan Brown going up the floor at leisurely pace was terrible. Fouling the Arizona shooter was terrible. Lots of mistakes by Texas and they some generous officiating for Arizona.

Officials conferred after the buzzer had sounded...they decided the horn came before the foul.
