Are there any recruited walk-ons in women's basketball these days?

Sydney Stout of Bixby. Vype had her as a preferred walk-on at Arkansas.

OU will rarely have walkons because the men who practice with the women's team take up the roles of the walkons.

I don't think that's the issue. When we've had walkons, it's either borrowing volleyball players when we're short-handed, or (more often) because it's a player with some talent, an existing connection to OU, and a work ethic that Coach thinks will set an example for the scholarship players. For example Carolyn Winchester.

Why have walk-ons when you have 15 scholarship players?

Good question! When you look at our roster (without calling any names) we have some who will see very little playing time, particularly in close games. When you find a recruit that intrigues the coaching staff but it is questionable whether they can make a significant contribution at the D-1 level why not try to get them to walk on and if they can play, let them earn a ship. If you give a ship to a player who can't contribute, you're pretty much stuck with them for 4 years.

My guess is they expected more from these players. And, even if some don't end up playing much, you have to be prepared for injuries. I believe Derica would have played as well as she is playing now if she had been given the time that Nicole was given. Of course, she would probably not be starting if Gioya had not gotten hurt and I don't know how it would have worked out if Nicole had stayed. I still believe LaNeisia can and will contribute more. She had some good games last year. Also, who knows how Shaya's injury has affected things and Gily's. One thing I have noticed
is last year and this year, Shaya is always talking to Kay Kay when she comes off the court. I believe she is watching and letting her know what she see. In the interview after KSU, Kay Kay actually said that Shaya had done that. So she may be bringing more to the game than we know.

I don't believe we have a player who would have walked on. They would have gone somewhere else. College is much more expensive now than it was. That is taking into consideration the value of the dollar in the 70's and the value now. Plus, more people could afford to send their children to college because there was a larger middle class, fewer people living paycheck-to-paycheck. Shoot probably some that are considered middle class now are living paycheck to paycheck. I remember in Jan., 1960,
my dad had only been with this huge corporate oil company for a year and due to the typical boom and bust in the business, Dad was laid off. He did not get another job until May of that year. We lived on savings. Four kids and Mom and Dad, plus am sure sent a little to my brother in college and his wife.

My point is we may be able to get some walk-ons but I don't believe they would be of the caliber sitting on the bench. I just don't see one wasted scholarship on this team. I don't know if you are worried that we won't have enough to offer next year or the year after, so are thinking we shouldn't use all? But really there are no guarantees. Maddie - two acls. Whitney - two acls. Other things occur such as a player not being happy. Not to say that you are not right about walk-ons and saving scholarships, but believe it is more difficult to get a player who turns out able to contribute that way.

Good thoughts.

You must also factor in that with Morgan Rich now on scholarship 10 of our 14 players are from out-of-state and out-of-state walk-ons would have to pay out-of-state tuition. Out of state tuition is $22,269. Then you have to add room and board on top of that. Really takes more than a lower middle class family to support a walk-on player that could get a scholarship elsewhere.

Got a chance to talk to Chad yesterday. He was at north shoe game

Sherri isn't interested in walk-on's. I've talked to a number of girls who tried to walk on with Chad running the tryouts.

He told them Sherri doesn't really want walk-ons.

That doesn't match our past history.

True but how long has it been since we have had a walk-on. Believe we recruited the one who joined at the beginning of the second semester when we were out of players. A couple of years ago we got a couple of volleyball players when we were in same situation. I know about Winchester but before that was it 1998?

Volleyball players are not really walk-on's in the truest sense of the word. They are already at OU on scholarship.
