Warren out? for year?

Willie Warren is the biggest factor why OU has been severely disappointing this season. It has been a combination of his attitude, his practice habits, his off the court issues, and his relationship with his teammates. If you can't see that/don't believe me, then you have your head in the sand.

Is Willie the only reason that this team is terrible? Far from it, but it started with him and he paved the way for a lot of the bad habits that these young freshmen developed. He has done very little to help fix some of the correctable issues.

You are right in saying that guys like me expected way too much from Willie Warren. I would venture that Coach Capel did the same. This team and this program will be better off with him gone next year. He and TMG don't function well in the same backcourt on either end of the court and I would take TMG over Willie Warren any day of the week. Give me TMG with Cade and Cam (or a slimmed down Pledger) in the starting backcourt next year and I will show you more wins and a better functioning offense and defense from the guards.

I will agree to disagree. Yes, Willie has brought a lot of this on himself, but I do not think him leaving makes this program better. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I agree with what you said but if we have Cade AND Cam or Pledger in the starting lineup next year I think we are going to suffer. I really don't want to have true freshmen starting again next year, and I think Pledger is best as a bench player at this point. We really need a JUCO wing that can score. Are we even looking at any?

It's definitely Willie's fault that Tiny is out of shape.

It's definitely Willie's fault that Fitzgerald came in out of shape.

It's definitely Willie's fault that Fitzgerald and Pledger stole at Dillards.

It's definitely Willie's fault that Crocker hurt his ankle.

It's definitely Willie's fault that he hurt his ankle.

It's definitely Willie's fault that Cade shoots us out of games.

It's definitely Willie's fault that our bigs are woefully inconsistent.

It's definitely Willie's fault that TMG flat out didn't show up to practice.

It's definitely Willie's fault that Ray Willis doesn't commit to putting on weight.

It's definitely Willie's fault we didn't recognize the need for JUCO help inside.

It's definitely Willie's fault Pledger went into a horrifying shooting slump.

It's definitely Willie's fault we had to rely on so many freshmen this season, especially since he got hurt and missed games.

It's definitely Willie's fault Ryan Wright can't catch.

It's definitely Willie's fault guys were stricken with the flu periodically, barely being able to play.

Heck, it's even Willie's fault when we lose the games he doesn't play in.

Did I miss anything?

Nope, but most of that stuff (injuries, illness, slumps, off the court incidents) happens to every team. Willie meant too much to this team and this team's success to do what he did both on and off the court. He isn't the only problem, but he is the main problem. I stand by that and am willing to take the flaming from those that think otherwise.

Good luck to Willie Warren next season. I wish him success wherever he goes (the NBA, Europe, the D-League....wherever).

I never had an agenda against the guy. I am simply going by what I have seen and what others have told me. And those of you that have had to endure my 8K plus posts on this board should know that I might just care a tiny bit about this program and that I tend to try and get as much insight into this program as possible. If that makes you think that I am just looking for a scapegoat or trying to rationalize the worst year of OU basketball since I have been a fan, then so be it.

The person that should be hardest on Willie Warren right now is Willie Warren. He literally cost himself millions of dollars and that is what makes these issues so sad. Many of them could have been corrected by Mr Warren himself, and by not doing so, he made a terrible mistake coming back this year. Really a sad deal imo. Oh well, life goes on...

It is that simple and Capel can't see it or fix it? It is a cop out to blame everythign on Willie Warren.

I seriously doubt there is a coach in the Big XII or any BCS school that is so bad one player could cause that coach and team to have a losing record and the coach couldn't spot it and remove the kid from the team.

Do you really think that little of Jeff Capel?

Has it ever occurred to you that you only get to see what people want you to see?

Wow! this thread went from a discussion about Willies ankle injury to how this season is all his fault.:ez-laugh:

This!

Let's just put it this way. This team was incredibly dependent on Willie living up to his preseason hype. He didn't. In fact, he could be one of the biggest "busts" in college basketball this year. He was picked by a major media outlet as the preseason player of the year, for christ's sake. Whether that's his "fault" or not, I don't really care. I'm just saying his performance ON THE COURT this year, or lack thereof, is a huge reason why we are where we are right now.

When you are a big time ballplayer on campus it isn't that easy. Now with the world of Facebook and Twitter and young kids not caring what they put out there for anyone to see, you see it all!

I think this is the part that frustrates fans (& probably the coaching staff) the most. From everything you read and hear Warren has issues both off and on the court. From the outside it appears he isn't doing the things he need to do to fix them. I agree with Big Time that it has cost him millions of dollars. He might make it up but it is doubtful. What could be a win-win for everyone has turned into a losing situation for everyone. Would OU have 20+ wins if Warren had played up to expectations and led this team in a similar way to Brothers Griffin? I don't know and no one knows. I'm sure it will be debated on message boards for years. Bottom line, this season has sucked. Personally, I don't lay the blame at any one individuals feet. I believe it was just a year that nothing went right. Same goes for Sooner football.

He averaged 16 points a game with some injuries. If that is the biggest bust in college basketball this year, I am not sure what a guy like Orlondo Allen or Kyle Hardrick are on OU's team alone.

If he shoots the three like he did last year, he probably averages over 20 a game. I don't see you calling Pledger a bust for a shooting slump - remember he was the best shooter Capel had ever seen (and most agreed he could shoot).

Willie Warren along with everyone else deserves credit for this season but Capel is the boss. It amazes me how many OU basketball fans want to blame children and put zero blame on the guy that is paid to make sure OU has a good basketball team.

At least act like respectable football fans and blame an assistant coach.

The biggest reason for the sub par year is the lack of experience, depth and athleticism at the post position.

And it amazes me how people want to refer to some kids, as old as 22 or 23, as children. What, none of our basketball players over the last 20 years were children, b/c they certainly didn't act like team has, on or off the court?

Exactly.

If WW is the root of all problems, then Capel could have suspended him indefinitely when the problems started occuring, or just booted him from the team. Neither of these things happened, so IMO, Capel is more of the problem than WW because he allowed WW to do this to the team.

I'm just not so sure all the problems lie at WW's feet. I definitely think some do, but Capel should get most of the blame, as well as the assistant coaches. Not to mention Crocker, the only 4 year senior, who should be leading this team (why didn't WW pull this crap last year? Probably because Taylor would kick his @$$).

I promised myself I wouldn't enter this conversation but here it goes..... I have no freaking clue as to why. Maybe Quick can dumpster dive for us.
