Warren out? for year?

I seriously doubt coaches look at WW's three point percentage, and decide how to defend him based on that.

1. I don't get the feeling WW is a "well above 40%" three point shooter, unless he is the 3rd or 4th option on offense. He isn't. He's the first.

2. One more three pointer a game doesn't change how he is defensed. Even though he hasn't been shooting it well, coaches have still been guarding him just like he had been. I've seen no difference.

3. Just what we need, WW taking more shots.

I said if he shoots better not more. Those that want to blame WW for all the problems and call him the biggest dissappointmen of all time are not going to change their minds. However, that doesn't make them right. WW is not that far off from incredible numbers. He has strong numbers as it is. Shooting a better precentage changes a lot for a guy, especially when that guy can get into the lane like Willie Warren.

Shooting percentages help...but WW has never been an effective jump-shooter. Streaky, yes, but never consistent.

So this argument is pointless.

And there is more to what a player contributes to the team then pure numbers. Especially when you are only looking at shooting % and ppg. Not a very good analytical tool.

Willie is really only an effective offensive player if you iso him. He needs the ball. He needs space. And he needs time. I'm also not sure I've seem an OU player just decide he is going to shoot the ball, even before he gets it. Somebody pointed this out the other day, and I agree. You can tell immediately when Willie gets the ball if he is thinking score or not.

But there is alot more to the game then ppg.

Yes. One three pointer a game is 19 and puts his percentage well above 40%. That totally changes how people have to defend him and then he abuses them on the drive.

I guess my problem with this line of thinking is that it is self-fulfilling.

It's like saying "Willie would have more production on the court if he was more productive."

Part of what seperates the great players from the good players is having that level of consistentcy on a night-in, night-out basis.

And anyway, I don't buy your "people would guard Willie differently if he was at 40% on 3-pointers" take. James Anderson doesn't shoot 40% from three-point range. But he has no problem scoring a lot by driving and drawing fouls.

Speaking of James Anderson, how would you rate the following four in OSU lore?

James Anderson
Desmond Mason
Adrian Peterson
Tony Allen

never effective ... really?

i guess you don't watch much basketball

Willie is averaging over 16 a game in a season when he is shooting the ball very poorly and not getting any love from the officials. (A full 7% below his freshman year percentage). One more make a game and getting some love form the officials and the guy is easily at 22-25 a game. He isn't that far off from an All Conference season. Just a fraction of an inch on about 30 shots and you guys are praising him like he is the second coming of Blake Griffin.

For those that don't think the rest of his game improves when his 3 point shooting percentage improves I really don't know what to tell you other than to point to Fitzgerald. He is hitting shots and other parts of his game are better. Confidence is huge in sports. When a player lacks confidence and is frustrated it impacts other areas.

Offensively WW's numbers are off a little this year, but that is not the crux of the issue. Warren is not doing the effort things well. He has been a very poor defender and does not move well without the ball. His overall approach to the game lacks effort. That is a really sad deal because I truly believe he has all the tools to have been national POY. It amazes me that a kid with that type of talent can't approach a game that most of us on this board would die to play professionally with a whole heart. Everything is in Warren's reach. All he has to do is reach out and grab it.

I agree with your point about confidence.

I would also add that if a mature player is faced with a drop in his shooting percentage that he just can't overcome, he plays harder on defense, tries to rebound better and helps his team in any other way he can. When he does these things, he often finds his shooting touch comes back.

Exactly.
