Oregon was ranked ahead. Oregon is probably the better team between the two. Yet, OU got the nod. You can only attribute that to Oklahoma being a big name in the college football scene.
Oregon finished in a virtual tie with OU, logging two more points than the Sooner -- 880-878 -- which can probably be attributed to the ever-classy Mike Gundy and some other knucklehead coaches voting oswho ahead of OU the day after the aggies lost to the Sooners at home.
Oregon lost two of its last four games -- one of them in a rout to 7-5 Arizona -- and squeaked by a 6-6 Oregon State squad by a single point in their regular-season finale.
That's called limping into the bowl season. You can say Oregon is a better team, but there's not all that much evidence to back that up.
Throw in the distance Ducks fans would have had to travel to reach New Orleans and yes, OU's vastly superior tradition, and it wasn't remotely a tough call for the Sugar Bowl execs.
