Basketball salaries in college basketball are getting out of control. Football generates enough revenue that the coaches salaries can be justified. But not basketball. Do the elite programs really generate enough revenue to justify the salaries that their coaches earn? I honestly don't know the answer to that question. But I do know that even if coach K wanted to come to Norman, OU basketball doesn't generate the revenue to pay him 2 mill per.

But all of the non elite schools are ponying up millions of dollars to pay coaches that do not make financial sense just to keep their programs relevant. So, what has to happen to happen to things under control? In professional leagues a strike or lockout can restore some order. But that is not an option in the collegiate ranks.

Can anything be done?

I actually wonder about this. Football seems to be getting out of hand too, at some of the smaller schools.

Have to derive more revenue from football! Higher TV contracts and higher ticket prices!

What is already being done: Conference/Individual School Television Networks, conference realignment, disproportionate income distribution according to program success, renegotiation of TV contracts, expanding the NCAA tournament (increases revenues), add more student fees, raise ticket prices, etc.

Im not sure that this really answers your question, but these are some of the effects of the rising cost of college athletics.

You either pay up like the big dogs or just wipe your rear on the porch!!!!!!!Go Sooners!!!!

I think the ADs need to stop "stealing" coaches. For example, schools like Arkansas need to stop paying more for a coach at Missouri. 20 years ago coaches came up through the ranks. They worked at a small school, then a mid-major and then a major.

Today it seems like the ADs are afraid to hire a guy from a small school or mid-major unless the coach has pulled off a miracle (ala Stevens, Smart of the guy at or that was at George Mason). I think the ADs need to stop trying to outspend each other. If they are not willing to do that, they need to impose a salary cap for coaching staffs.
