...was a disgrace to college basketball. Playing a D-III school in the middle of conference season?

Very weird.
Sam Houston State beat Hardin Simmons by 51. That's how good they are.

They were supposed to play Michigan originally. Fell through- so they scrambled to find an opponent which is tough because everyone is in conference. Probably should have just had a bye but different coaches have different philosophies about this sort of thing.

Baylor didn't play Isaiah Austin or Pierre Jackson at all and played their starters very limited minutes. I don't know if I would call it a disgrace.

Scott Drew is a certified jerk, but he can recruit. Wonder how much he is paying those guys.

They paid Mary Hardin Baylor (another DIII) $10,000 when they played.....I bet HS got between $4000-10,000 the $4000 number is fairly standard for low major to mid major types for a similar game. The team I coach is similar to a DIII and that is about what all low major DIs offer.......some will go as low as 3000. I'd get my tail kicked by Baylor for $10,000 though......

Going way back to the 50s, wasn't H-S playing like D1 football at one time?

I think he was referring to Drew's recruiting tactics not scheduling. ;)

Yeah -- it sure seems that they should have just taken the Saturday off.

It's not like this is football, where you HAVE to fill a certain slot with an opponent. Baylor already played 12 non-conference games. Don't know why they HAD to schedule this one...

I read somewhere the big 12 requires a game the Saturday prior to a big Monday game. Not sure if that's a fact or not but would explain the need for a game on a bye if they wanted the Monday TV slot today.

If that's the case, it's the exact opposite of what the rule should be. Let both teams have Saturday off so they will be rested enough to give a good performance on national TV.

Remember when football played UT-Chattanooga and Joe C told the national media it was because our previous non-conf opponent backed out and we were scrambling? Remember how a lot of Big 12 teams' non-conference schedules were sent into disarray and needed last-minute replacements (we had Florida A&M to replace now-conference opponent TCU, OSU had someone they beat by like 84 or so)?

Perhaps Baylor basketball has a similar excuse?

That's why I'm not jumping all over them. For all we know they could have scheduled TCU. while not a difficult team, they are another Texas team, private christian school, and were former SWC rivals.

That sounds like a really odd rule.

Although it's difficult to tell if it's accurate, because generally all 10 teams have a game on Saturdays during conference play.

I don't know if that rule exist or not. But, if it does, I'm sure it is a dictate of the TV contract.
