The NCAA made a change to allow practices to start 2 weeks earlier. They now can start practicing 42 days before their 1st game, and can have 30 practices during that time-frame. Our first game is Nov 16th so that means we can begin on or around October 4th -6th. The 4th is a Saturday and the football team has an away game at TCU, so I'm guessing practices will start on Monday, October 6th.... just a guess.

Has OU announced anything?

The old rule said they started practices 30 days before the 1st game with 24 practices during those 30 days.

Basketball Practice Start Date Change

This week started the two hours per week of preseason practice. The same type of schedule they had while summer school was in session. Official practice starts Oct. 6th.

Good to know. Are you going to be able to attend any of the practices and give us some of your great reports/observations? I guess Bennett (minor surgery) and Buford (eligibility questions) won't be practicing. Booker may still be a little banged up after his scooter accident.

No, not now. While myself and a handful of others attended most of the summer practices, a mid level flunky with the program insisted that I not post practice reports for that period. I jawed back a little but went along.

Now, he insist that no "outsiders" be present for practice until Oct. While that rule may apply to me and everyday day variety season ticket holders and tip in club members, I would guess that it does not apply to big donors to the program. Any of those will probably continue to filter in and out as they please.

It is unclear if the policy change comes from Coach Kruger. My guess would be no.

So, if I understand correctly, the "open practice" policy which allows anyone to attend practice goes back into effect on October 6, which is 17 days away.

Looking forward to it.

I hear Lattin is looking great! Booker is already shooting with a minor cast on his left wrist. He should be ready to go. DJ is also shooting and should be ready for practice or close to it.
Buddy and Isiah are both physically more mature. Ryan is shooting well. Thomas looks like a big but who knows if he can play. Jordan is improved over last year. If listens to Kruger and Henson he will be a great player.

That's what I think, too, Gary. The knucklehead staffer's decision to bar you from making your practice reports seems to be a direct contradiction to the open door policy Coach Kruger introduced when he arrived at OU three years ago. I'm betting he has no idea what you were told to do. I would be very disappointed to learn that is not the case.

If thomas is able to play. He'll be our best big and probably best player overall. Similar to the way osby took over.
Him and buddy will be deadly 1-2 punch.

Is this a concern?

No it isn't just my opinion of his talent and that we have two guys who know how to play the point. He is a great kid from everything I've heard!

Wonder who starts alongside Spangler if Thomas and Buford are both ruled out?

That would make us pretty thin inside. Spangler. Bennett. Lattin. McNeace. Not a lot of room for error (injuries, or guys just not being ready to play) at that point.

My guess would be Bennett.

Have Buford eligibility concerns been discussed on here? This is the first I'm hearing of it.

See page 2 of the “Gary” thread (link).

Apparently, the issue is that the NCAA did not approve some "core classes" at Buford's high school. The high school is at issue. Buford did nothing wrong, but he is paying the price.

OU has already appealed with the NCAA. Originally they weren't going to let Buford even go to school. We were able to get this changed. I believe he will have to miss fall practices but should be able to start practicing with the team for the second semester. OU is trying to get him to be able to practice the whole time because he did well in school this summer. The NCAA is saying he needs to prove himself for the first semester which OU thinks that he has already done.

The coaches love his talent and he has been a great kid to be around. He is going to be very good whenever he gets a chance to play!
