Does OU have one, anyone who can be a commanding presence in the paint? If not who can OU get to fill that void? Can a team win without one?

I think this was Jeff's weakest area as a coach, and his staff's as a group. We were used to Kelvin's tough rebounding drills, etc. Coach Kruger will do a much better job here. I'm not sure we know whether we have someone who can rebound or not at this point.

Osby and Goff will help. It helps to have players equally as big and athletic as the opponents. Because as much as desire determines who gets the ball, desire has limits.

Did you not watch last night's game?

Butler's coach said that taking charges are like their blocked shots. They don't have a shot blocker, yet they play pretty darn good defense. Kelvin rarely had a shot blocker, and his teams always played good defense. Defense is about more than steals and blocks. Simply not giving up easy shots (ie, good rotations, getting back on the break) alone can make you pretty good on defense.

Would I love to have a monster shot blocker in the paint? Sure. But it isn't a requirement for being good on defense.

You dont have to a shot blocker, much like WT said, but you do have to rebound and this starts by getting your butt on someones hip.

Right now our best inside defender/rebounder is CJ Washington.

If LK doesn't sign an impact big this month, rebounding and blocking shots will be by committee again. Goff has the ability to lead in both areas. The question is, will he have the desire to do it?

Better overall team defense would mask a lot of Fitz's, and our other posts, defensive shortcomings. I think LK will make that happen.

There is hope that we can be a rotating team.

Good post. The only caveat I would make is that KS had two pretty good shot blockers during his last 5-season stretch with J. Brown ('01-04) and Taj Gray ('04-06). Johnnie Gilbert wasn't too shabby, either.

But your point stands: There are other valuable aspects that a player can contribute on the defensive end despite the ability to block shots.

And Fitz sucks at rebounding. I'm sorry, but If I'm 6'8 playing 35 minutes a game, then I would expect to get 3 rebounds a game by accident. If I actually put some effort into it and tried to jump, I figure I could clear 8 rebounds at a minimum. I can think of no greater slap-in-the-face than coach (capel) saying I'm a "below_the_rim kind of player" at 6'8. Hope Lonnie can work on Fitz in that regard. Somebody needs to help the kid with his ups.

Rebounding and defense are a little about technique and a lot about desire.

I think LK is going to demand more and that will result in better results.
