Why the N.I.T. might be better

I’m a big OU fan and would love it if OU made the NCAA tournament. However, if I look at it objectively I don’t think they deserve to. The last two weeks OU has played some stretches that were absolutely horrendous. This is the time of year a bubble team should be showing the committee they belong in the tournament. O.U. didn't do that.

That being said, I think there are two big positives to this team falling to the N.I.T.:


1. Great lesson for the underclassmen. If they had to suffer the pain of being so close to the tournament only to be rejected they would remember in future seasons that every minute of every game matters. It’s pretty clear that the last 10 minutes against Texas and the first half against TCU resulted from a lack of focus and enthusiasm. The young guys would likely remember the pain and take every game seriously for the rest of their career at O.U. If O.U. were to get bailed out because of a weak NCAA tournament field that lesson might not be learned.

2. More game experience. The last two weeks have made it apparent that this team will likely be one and done if they do make the NCAA tournament. If they made the NIT they would be one of the favorites to win the tournament. 4-5 games against quality opponents and getting to play in Madison Square Garden would be a great experience for the underclassmen. Also winning the NIT would be a better way to spring into next season than getting beat by 20 in the NCAA tournament.

It would suck for our seniors, but I have a hard time having empathy for them after the last two weeks. The seniors are the ones I expected to step up and make plays when the opposing teams made big runs. It didn't happen.
 
Good points, but I would argue the NIT is NEVER a better option than an NCAA tournament berth.
 
You need to watch other college basketball...if we don't deserve to go, then a lot of other good teams don't either if were just going by the last couple of weeks.

As for missing the NIT....just stupid

NIT is not better.
 
Never said the committee should base the decision based off the last two weeks alone. I simply said if you're already a bubble team the last two weeks should effectively be your closing statement. Committee has said before they tend to give results at the end of the season more weight than earlier results.

"If they make" didn't mean I think they won't get an invitation to the N.I.T., it meant if they make the N.I.T. because they didn't make the N.C.A.A.

I would love if O.U. made the tournament but I just don't see how anyone can say they earned it. If you disagree with me go watch the last 9 minutes against Texas, the first half against T.C.U., and the last 9 minutes against Iowa St. Then consider that all happened within the LAST TWO WEEKS.

Earning it is really irrelevant. If you get in, you just get in.

Everything about your program improves with an NCAA bid.
From recruiting to ticket sales to nationally broadcast games.

I mean, I get the gist of what you're saying but still...no.

This simply is not true. Body of work.
 
NITs are close to worthless and not a selling point for your program.
 
Clearly in a vaccum the NCAA tournament is better than the NIT. The headline should probably be changed to read "Why the N.I.T. might be better for this particular team." I would hate for our talented young guards to take away that you can lose focus and stop giving full effort for huge chunks of time (Texas, Iowa St.) or even entire halves (TCU) and everything will still be o.k. in the end. Usually the great success stories come from failures.

I want OU to make the tournament just as much as the next O.U. fan, but I want them to deserve and earn it. I'm not so sure they did that this year.

I'll be watching on Selection Sunday and hoping O.U. makes it, but I won't be surprised or act offended if they don't.

Since it's this exact team we're talking about, I wouldn't be surprised if a NIT bid after so close to getting in would completely take the wind out of their sails and bring about an upset loss at home to a team we're potentially better than.
 
I do think osux would be better in the nit but OU needs to be dancing.
