Baylor has major problems in many areas. Last night at the game against Texas, they once again demonstrated why they are a problematic institution - and an embarrassment to the Big-12. And it goes well beyond athletics.

You are probably aware that at tournaments when a team comes on the floor, their band likes to play the school fight song. Well the Baylor band has a method of even being unsportsmanlike in that moment. When the Texas players ran onto the court (the Baylor team came out several minutes later), as the Texas band played their fight song, the Baylor band immediately started a loud junk song (just loud obnoxious noise in my opinion) to interfere with the Texas band.

Think about it. Athletes killing teammates. A male athletic assaulting a female athlete, having even their WBB program receiving sanctions for recruiting violations (how many other programs have had that happen?), etc. They are not even able to give the common courtesy of showing good sportsmanship to their opponents. Unfortunately it isn't just women's basketball and Kim Mulkey. It even pervades all the way down to the band. Why would anyone want to attend such an institution?

They never should have been allowed into the big-12. And as was reported at the time, it was only Texas politics that made it happen. Apparently the other schools in the state already knew it was not the type institution whose value system matched with the kind of values the conference needed or wanted.

When the conference breaks up somewhere down the line, BU will be one of the ones left out to fend for themselves - with very few options. Who knows, maybe they can drop to D2 status and find someone who wants to mess with them.

For some reason, the Big Twelve loves them. But, then, the Big Twelve is in Las Colinas. Baylor represents the old Texas better than UT does. Time will pass it by, but not soon.

I suspect Baylor is one of the schools that gets apoplectic when DB pushes expansion. Baylor would likely be hurt pretty badly if revenue splitting dropped.

They have a small football stadium and apparantly have difficulty filling it for some/many games anyway. Finances are a challenge for everyone, but for a small school like BU, it is even more difficult.

I don't know of any schools who are openly supportive of BU, but you do get the impression a handful of folks in the conference office are BU fans. Possibly because they went to school there, are Baptists, or some similar reasons.

Baylor actually has a lot of money. I think their endowment is about that of OU. Their new football stadium seats about 45,000, can expand to 55,000, and they probably will fill it (have thus far). It is brand new. It was at least partially funded by Drayton McLane who is well-known in Texas as a grocer supplier. You can see his trucks outside every grocery store in the area, even at 7-11.

I think the Big Eight-SWC merger occurred when the governor of Texas was a devout Baylor alum and wouldn't let it occur without Baylor.

I'm not a Baylor fan by any stretch of the imagination, but I have known kids from Norman that have played in the Baylor band. They always behaved with class, and if what you said happened last night really happened, it had to have been inadvertent.

Again, why does anyone care what Baylor or Texas does?? If it doesn't concern OU forget about it. I tend to believe it is more jealously than anything else.

I saw Ann in an interview and she laughed and said NO, when asked if she requested Hypocrite U's inclusion into Big 12. In fact, she had UT degree as well and was a regular attendee at Texas women's basketball games, when Jody coached (a fellow Hypocrite U grad), until she died. I'm pretty sure it was Bob Bullock (Lt Gov and Hypocrite U law school grad) who was the force. Below quote I found pretty much backs that up.

Texas politicians ban[edit]
After the SEC announced their intent to leave the CFA, the Big 8 and SWC members re-opened discussions to sell their rights together. "The Baylor Project" by Barry G. Hankins and Donald D. Schmeltekoff (page 68) states that on February 11, 1994, SWC member schools' leaders met a few Big 8 leaders in Dallas to discuss potentially selling both leagues' media content in a package deal. Discussions broke down on February 16, reportedly over UT's interest in the Pac-10. The Big Eight began negotiating a deal that would not include the full SWC as a partner and Texas A&M approached the SEC.[17]

In Texas, word leaked out that UT & Texas A&M were close to leaving the SWC; UT to the Pac-10[17] or Big Eight and eventually Texas A&M to the SEC. Texas state senator David Sibley, a Baylor alumnus and member of the very powerful Senate Finance Committee, approached UT Chancellor Bill Cunningham and asked him pointedly whether UT planned to leave the SWC on its own for the Big Eight. Cunningham tried to change the subject. Ultimately he did not deny it.[8]

Sibley approached LT Governor Bob Bullock, a Texas Tech and Baylor alumnus. Texas state senator John Montford of Lubbock was equally motivated to protect Texas Tech's path to the Big 12. The trio put together a group of legislators who worked to threaten Texas and Texas A&M's access to the state of Texas's Permanent University Fund.[8]

Bullock called together a meeting of supportive legislators as well as UT's and Texas A&M's leaders on February 20, 1994.[18] UT Chancellor William Cunningham admitted that Texas planned to join the Big Eight[8] and A&M's leadership still targeted the SEC.[8]

A deal was worked out where all four schools would go together to the Big 12. A&M was convinced not to pursue SEC membership (LSU was prepared to sponsor the Aggies) in return for Bullock finding the votes to approve the construction of Reed Arena. Baylor and Texas Tech would join the Aggies in coming with UT into the new version of the Big Eight.[8]

Texas's Governor Ann Richards, a Baylor and UT alumna, is often credited with getting Baylor included, but, was absent from the February 20 meeting[8] and no investigative reports confirm her active involvement. The Baylor Report claimed that she presented herself as neutral. Richards' former Chief of Staff, John Fainter, is on record saying "She just was not involved to any great degree in working that out...I'd have to say she was informed, but she wasn't pounding the table or anything like that." Richards was aware of the public perception of her involvement and the thought amused her.[19])

UT officials informed the Big Eight leadership that the Austin school was now receptive to an invitation and the Big Eight issued invitations to Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor, and Texas Tech. All four schools quickly accepted.[17]

At the time of the deal, Texas politicians denied any coercion took place. Over the years, investigative reporters challenged that notion. The idea that Bullock and the state government coerced A&M to join and forced UT to take Tech and Baylor to the Big 12 has constantly been downplayed by Cunningham,[19] but former UT president Robert Berdahl claimed that UT was threatened. “As I recall, it wasn't a very veiled threat to cut budgets if Tech was left behind.”[8]

Baylor President Herb Reynolds thanked Bullock and the other politicians for helping Baylor get into the conference. Despite Baylor's strong credentials, clearly Reynolds felt the politicians played a key role in getting the Bears and Texas Tech into the new conference.[20] The minutes of the February 23, 1994 meeting of the Baylor Board of Regents where the Big 12's invitation was accepted state, "Baylor University owes a strong debt of gratitude to Lt. Governor Bob Bullock, Senator David Sibley, Senator John Montford, Representative Rob Junell, and other legislators for their invaluable assistance during the deliberations leading to the acceptance of the invitations."[21]

Wouldn't surprise me. The Lt Gov is said to have more power than the governor in Texas.

The Lt. Gov. Usually is the most powerful politician in Texas. That's because he decides what comes up for votes on the Senate floor, where bills get assigned and who is on which committees. He rules the roost.

People can complain about Baylor but the fact is Mulkey recruits and can coach. She is going to be their for awhile and SC is going to have to get with it or were going to have more Baylor embarrassing moments. I can't stand Mulkey but she is up and into the game all the time. Remember her in college at Louisiana Tech. She was competitive as hell and a hell of a player. Unless something changes they are going to be on top for a long time. SC can do it but does she still have the drive. I say yes but we will know in a very short time.

I agree, it won't be long. The class of 2017 is being recruited now. We have a commitment from Ana which means we have 5 more ships to give out. There is a lot of talent in Texas and one or two in Oklahoma. In a few months we will know who has committed to us. If we have a great recruiting class, we should breathe a sigh of relief that we are in for positive change. I am not expecting Sherri to sign 5 more players. I'm more interested in quality than quantity. If she signs 2-3 more great players and ends up with 12-13 on the roster, I will be thrilled.

I really believe Sherri can get it done and I believe she knows they need to get some outstanding talent. We need some leaders on the court like Dales and Hand and some toughness like Amanda Thompson and Daniel Robinson. I would love to see Sherri get some damn technicals and show that fire again. She is a Hall of Fame Coach very much deserved. Our teams lately have no fire. They need to get that back and believe in each other. It starts with the Coach and winning. Hopefully going forward we all will see it.

This is just more of the sour grapes attitude of a few OU fans who post here regularly. Overall, I find that many of the OU fans who post here know basketball and respect the accomplishments of BU women's basketball. But let Baylor succeed, and for some of you it's back to digging up stories from ancient history that have nothing to do with WBB, and reminiscing about past OU glory from the days of the Paris twins.

Unfortunately for OU, Baylor's WBB team is loaded with talent, with more coming in next year, and UT is on the rise.

It's not "reminiscing" when I refer to previous seasons with the twins. It's referring to an era that has not been repeated via strategic/well planned recruiting and planning for the successful future of the program. And I could care less what Mulkey, Aston, and others are doing or not doing relative to violations, hollering on the bench, etc. There's plenty to be concerned about at OU.

It's not a concern as much as Sherri getting her mojo back. She needs to start going after kids that she probably doesn't try to recruit because may be character wise they aren't quite what she wants or they don't fit the system. You have to get recruits with toughness and some attitude. If you have to change up the system to fit their skill sets. We need great post play and kids that can take it aggressively to the basket. Tough minded defense like Amanda Thompson.
