Willie Warren Waived

You didn't even read my post.

And players can always go back and get degrees...see Royal Ivey finishing up his this fall.

Royal Ivey...lol

Did that dude ever sniff beating OU? :OUbball-logo:

Sampson owned Barnes.

Then Capel should have called his mother and sat in a room with her and Willie and explained life to the young man with multiple examples of guys as talented or more talented than WW that did not make it in the NBA.

Heck, I would have a file cabinet of material on guys that didn't make it solely for the purpose of convincing second round picks to return to college and get their degree.

How do we know he didn't. Should LK have sat Newell down with his family and convinced him he should stay here??? Maybe he tried!!!!

Denver I totally respect you as a poster and fan, but when you make posts like this, followed up by your answer to Boca, it just appears that your hatred of JC overrules your ability to post objectionably on any subject he is mentioned in.

I know that you understand certain players are not going to listen to anyone. I mean come on, Phil Jackson, the best professional coach ever could not convince Shaq and Kobe to put their personal feud aside for the team's sake.

Jackson once said if those 2 could have buried the hatchet, LA may have won 3 to 6 more rings with them together.

It is well documented WW, Tiny, and TMG came here with a personal agenda, and no one was going to change that. I understand the criticism of JC recruiting them, though I remember most here were giddy when we signed them. I still believe most coaches would have thought they could rein those guys in, especially a young black coach who probably thought he could relate to/reach them. He could not reach them, and looking at what Tiny/TMG are doing now, no one else has successfully reached them......

I have followed the NBA for many yrs, not just when the Thunder came to town. WW's are a dime a dozen in NBA camps. He has some talent for sure, but what Boca said is closer to the truth. He is not ever going to be anything but a guy who may make a shorthanded roster/NBDL level player. That is still a pretty talented player.

Staying in college would have not helped WW. Playing PG for a terrible division one school would not have helped his stock...he can improve whatever skills he needs on a full time basis in the league, already has his foot in the door. With NCAA restrictions, WW would not have been able to receive coaching, particiapte in summer leagues and have access to other amenities pros use. If anything, WW should have gone pro after his freshman year, when he was a projected lotto pick.
Only reason he was released is because Billups was picked up off waivers (which most teams would have done in the Clippers situation).

I agree here. He would have at least gotten a nicer contract, and more time to improve his skills. NBA owners are always slow to give up on guys they drafted high, until they have given them every chance to show they can produce at that level.

This is true. Every year when training camp cuts are listed I'm amazed. I'll say "that guy is pretty good". Then I'm just as amazed at some of the guys that make teams. Unfortunately being quicker than most guys in college doesn't get you much in the NBA. If he's smart he can still earn a good living playing somewhere. He just needs to take what is given to him. Europe/D League is better than no league.

Lol at those criticizing Capel for not convincing Warren to stay. First, the kid was an obvious cancer and was dragging down his teammates and the team. Why would you want him around another two years?

I thought he was just hurt his last season.

I don't hate Jeff Capel. I don't even know Jeff Capel. I just think he was a terrible coach and I think the members of his fan club are a joke.

I hope he did sit down with Willie Warren and his mom. Maybe he did, maybe he didn't. I have no clue and I really wasnt' criticising him as much as stating my opinion that coaches owe it to these second round picks to really work hard at convincing them to stay in school. I also think it is entirely possible that Willie Warren behaved so poorly that no coach would want to spend five minutes trying to convince him to return. Sometimes that happens.

Finally, all of my comments about Willie Warren are based upon the assumption that he would come back to school and do his part. I feel the same way about TMG and Tiny. It clearly would have been in all of their best interests to stay in school as hard working student athletes. Now that might not have been a possibility. Those three guys may not have had any interest in doing what Capel said or representing the school in a positive manner. If that is the case, Capel probably handled the situation correctly.

I thought he was just hurt his last season.

He was just hurt. That's why we never saw Willie do an explosive dunk when he was on a fast break. He would just lay it in. He had a nagging ankle injury the entire season. Capel stated numerous times that Willie was never the problem.

Even Tiny wasn't that bad. He was just kind of dumb and fell into the wrong crowd. But he's genuinely a good kid.

TMG was the virus that just spread his cancer throughout the locker room.

Fair enough...... I can agree with this post.

Jeff Capel has assembled 3 NCAA tournament caliber teams at 2 separate programs, leading one of them to the Elite 8 and currently holds a job that 99.9% of basketball coaches in the world would die for by the age of 35. He is the cream of the crop.

You have mentioned being an attorney ... Well if you aren't billing at $2,000 per hour and have a full schedule with a waiting list of clients you are a terrible attorney and anybody who says otherwise is a joke.

See how that works?

Jeff Capel did a bad job at OU and was fired as a result. Look at the guys recruiting failures:

Tony Neysmith
Bobby Maze
Chirs Early
Ray Willis
TMG
WW
Tiny Gallon
Orlondo Allen
Kyle Hardrick
Nick Thompson
Ahmed Abdul
TJ Taylor
Keith Clark
Kyle Canno
Juan Pattillo
Calvin Newell

I probably can't think of everyone. That is 16 kids that left the program in 5 years under less than ideal circumstances. It doesn't include the three signees under Sampson that were released so you could argue that 19 recruits associated with Capel did not work out in 5 years. Is every one of those kids not working out Capel's fault? Probably not but at some point you have to look at things and start to think perhaps the guy in charge has something to do with it.

Cade Davis, Blake Griffin, and Tony Crocker did work out? OK and all three kids were Oklahoma kids (Crocker spent his pre high school days in Lawton). Omar Leary and Ryan Wright also worked out. The current players will likely work out so add Honore, CJ Washington, Cam Clark, Fitzgerald, Blair, Neal and Blair to guys that stayed. 12 will work out.

That is freaking horrible.

Prior to Capel OU had the longest consecutive post season appearance streak in the nation. In one season that ended. He then repeated that feat two more times at OU. Honestly, I don't even get your analogy to an attorney. Additionally, his staff was involved in NCAA violations. His great record at VCU was making the NCAA and losing in the first round and making the NIT and losing in the first round. Two other years he didn't make the post season. The year before he was at VCU they did better. The year after they did better. Shaka Smart did a lot better.

As to your attorney comments, I don't even get it. Jeff wasn't being paid 25% more than the highest paid people in his profession. He wasn't winning. He wasn't producing the results the position demanded and he was fired.

Capel got what he deserved based on his results at OU.

But I don't blame him that much for WW not making it in the NBA. That's all on WW and it being tough to make it in the NBA. Hollis wasn't the only guy from those teams that was talented enough to make it in the league. Ebi Ere didn't make it either and he was talented enough. So was Ace but he didn't make it either. The NBA isn't an easy league to make unelss you are 7' tall.

Denver, what on earth does your last post have anything to do with Willie Warren being cut? If I was Jeff Capel I'd be a little worried about grown men spending that much time thinking about me. Obsession can be a dangerous thing.

However, if you are going to think about Jeff Capel, perhaps you might think about these 5 guys he recruited - Stephen Pledger, Andrew Fitzgerald, Cam Clark, Romero Osby and Tyler Neal. They are five of the six best players on an 8-1 team led by a great coach who most believe will have OU back in the Dance Sooner rather than later.

As for Willie Warren, like Ace, Hollis, TMac, Ryan Minor and a host of others, there is a possibility he just isn't good enough to be on an NBA roster...not rocket science.

I was responding to a single person that continues to tell me and anyone that will listen that Jeff Capel is a great coach. Outside of the conversation being taken in that direction by Boca it has nothing or vey little to do with Willie Warren.

I don't blame Jeff Capel for Willie Warren not making the pros. I hope Capel tried to convince Willie he should spend another year or two playing college basketball but if Willie had burned his bridges so badly that Capel wasn't interested in him anymore, I don't fault Capel for that. It would be quite rare for me to fault a coach for kicking a kid off the team.

I did specifically mention the guys on the team. I credited Capel with all of them working out. I just don't get people defending Capel. The guy was bad for OU basketball. That is why he was fired.

Fair enough. I went back and read what you were responding to. I'm not sure if you were upset with his comments about Capel as much as you were about attorneys. As for the former, it has been rehashed thousands of times, and you need to keep in mind that regardless of those who liked Jeff such as myself, we're ALL ECSTATIC that Lon Kruger is leading the program now. As for the latter, although I do all right, I probably wouldn't mind switching salaries with you. :)

Do you know for a fact Capel didn't do what you just recommended? Or are you saying you hope Capel had done what you recommended?

I could care less what he said about attorneys. It didn't even make sense and it was an insult. If it had been an insult to attorneys I still wouldn't have cared.

I deal with attorneys all the time and I don't like them. I only have a two good friends that are attorneys because most of them are jerks. To put this in perspective I spent three years in law school, about a year and half getting an advanced law degree and have worked in a bunch of law firms. That means I have known hundreds if not close to a thousand attorneys. Even with all of that contact with attorneys I literally can count on both hands the number of attorneys I would call friends and only associate with two on regular basis. (Of the friends probably five or six of them were in my pledge class at OU so I knew them before they became attorneys.)

This post helps explain your obsessive hatred of Capel. It's always been my opinion the people who are constantly complaining about Capel, Obama, whoever. It says a lot more about them than their target.
