Start praying, TU fans...
Wojcik to speak with Georgia Tech?
3/23/2011 5:23:52 PM
It’s the time of year again when Tulsa coach Doug Wojcik’s name begins to surface with head coach vacancies.
A blog in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution said that Georgia Tech officials declined to comment on a report that Wojcik would interview for their opening.
Wojcik, as he has done in years past, won’t discuss speculation when his name is linked to job openings. He has just completed his sixth season as the Golden Hurricane’s head coach.
Why would he seem to make a good candidate at Georgia Tech? (or some of the other schools looking for coaches?)
It’s likely his six years of head coaching experience at Tulsa combined with his assistant coaching time at places like Michigan State, North Carolina and Notre Dame. He has averaged 20 wins a season during his time at TU, which includes an 11-win season in his rookie campaign.
An argument could be made that he did his best coaching job this past season, when the team struggled through injuries and youth for a 9-9 start and then finished tied for second in the Conference USA race, just one game from winning a regular-season title.
Any school that considers him would also have to sell him to fans and boosters. No NCAA Tournament appearances would be a negative.
Wojcik was closer than most think to being named to the Iowa job last year and was in the running for the Stanford opening two seasons ago.
One thing is certain: For Wojcik to leave, it would have to be the right fit and what’s best for his family. He’s always maintained that he likes the basketball team that is returning next season.
