Start praying, TU fans...

Wojcik to speak with Georgia Tech?
3/23/2011 5:23:52 PM

It’s the time of year again when Tulsa coach Doug Wojcik’s name begins to surface with head coach vacancies.

A blog in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution said that Georgia Tech officials declined to comment on a report that Wojcik would interview for their opening.

Wojcik, as he has done in years past, won’t discuss speculation when his name is linked to job openings. He has just completed his sixth season as the Golden Hurricane’s head coach.

Why would he seem to make a good candidate at Georgia Tech? (or some of the other schools looking for coaches?)

It’s likely his six years of head coaching experience at Tulsa combined with his assistant coaching time at places like Michigan State, North Carolina and Notre Dame. He has averaged 20 wins a season during his time at TU, which includes an 11-win season in his rookie campaign.

An argument could be made that he did his best coaching job this past season, when the team struggled through injuries and youth for a 9-9 start and then finished tied for second in the Conference USA race, just one game from winning a regular-season title.

Any school that considers him would also have to sell him to fans and boosters. No NCAA Tournament appearances would be a negative.

Wojcik was closer than most think to being named to the Iowa job last year and was in the running for the Stanford opening two seasons ago.

One thing is certain: For Wojcik to leave, it would have to be the right fit and what’s best for his family. He’s always maintained that he likes the basketball team that is returning next season.

I like Wojcik and think he did a decent job this year.

I dislike Wojcik because he hasnt put TU in the NCAA Tournament in 6 years and his teams suck on offense.

Now, with that in mind, Memphis dominated that league and made them look a little worse than they were for most of his tenure. They had 3-5 draft picks (mostly lotto picks) in a mid-major basketball league.

If the league only sends one team, it was practically impossible for TU or any other C-USA team to go.

As a TU fan, I would like to see Wojcik replaced.

Tulsa coach Doug Wojcik was scheduled to interview Thursday for the vacant Georgia Tech job, a source close to the search told Sporting News.

Tech is seeking a replacement for Paul Hewitt, who was dismissed following a 13-18 season and five NCAA Tournament appearances in 11 seasons.

Wojcik has a 123-78 record in six seasons at Tulsa, winning 20 or more games in four of the past five seasons. Tulsa tied for second in Conference USA twice over the past three seasons. The team made two NIT appearances and won the College Basketball Invitational in 2008.

His best season came in 2009, when the Golden Hurricane finished 25-11.

Prior to becoming head coach at Tulsa, Wojcik served as an assistant coach at Notre Dame, North Carolina and Michigan State. He played point guard for Navy in 1986, when David Robinson led the Midshipmen to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight.

He could be the next Gene Chizik.

I don't know about that equivalent... DW wasn't an assistant on a National Championship team (like Chizik was for Texas), nor on a team that was the equivalent of an undefeated Auburn team (like Chizik was in 2004).

Tulsa would be a great place to start for Terry Evans. Wojcik would have to take the Tech job first before we can even discuss that possibility.

Was thinking the same thing.

I don't know if Tulsa would do it, but some mid-major D1 school should.

He was an assistant on a Final Four and an Elite Eight team though.

Tulsa basketball fans are bored.. they were bored even when they won 25 games a few years ago. These people want fast-paced, exciting basketball. They dont like scoring 45-50 points and running the clock out.

Sometimes I cant even watch TU play, they are so boring.

Bill Self, Tubby Smith, Nolan Richardson, and even some of the guys before Wojcik played a more entertaining brand of basketball. Then, they hire a Tom Izzo guy who just sucks the fun right out of the building.

With that said, Terry Evans would bring some excitement and good Oklahoma recruiting connections back to TU. I think he would do a fantastic job there.
