#14 OU vs KSU 1pm 1/23

Coach Jennie, please, please, please find a big (tall) girl to play in the center.

I've decided that if officials are going to wear masks during games, they should have to have their names on the back of their shirts in 6 in letters.

You have to laugh when you compare the way the WVU game was called to the way this game was called. Anything short of a single-leg takedown was OK at WVU. If you breathed hard on the big girl it was a foul today. Before all the apologists for the officials get their panties in a wad, I'm not saying the officiating had anything to do with the outcome of the game. Their big girl is very skilled. I would like to see KSU play against a team that has an equally skilled big girl.

They are out there but not many with her height and skill. Tech had 2 6'4" and 1 6'3" girl. They apparently fronted and denied Lee the ball as she only got 12 shot and made only 12 points as Tech won big time.

My guess is the KSU guards were not near as affective against Tech as they were against us today at getting ball into Lee with very accurate elevated passes out of the reach of OU defenders. And they were outstanding today with virtually no contest passes to Lee.

And their game against Tech was in Lubbock.

She had 4 fouls and shot zero free throws in that game.

Scott fouls out in 9 minutes, and their center plays 36 minutes and has 1 foul That sounds about par for the course playing at K state. And I don't think washington played, correct? Again neither would have made a difference our only chance today was to outscore them and the way we started the game made that impossible

Based on Scott fouling out in 9 minutes, you would think she was beating the crap out of someone.

Not a good game. Aside from the dominance by Lee we seemed to be playing frantic most of the game. Lot of difficult and forced shots and a lot of baskets missed that we normally make. Van too many bad shots. Our bigs really play small. Not sure they are as big as their listed ht.

I am not a big fan of the K-State coach. Lee can be this dominant anytime he makes use of her. Not that she would score 61 every night but he does not go to her enough and no one ever dumps off to her when they drive. His guard do a much better job that the guards did last year but no way most teams should be able to stop her.

Yes, Lee is very skilled, in addition to being 3-4 inches taller than anyone we have to guard her.

Saturday's dominance by KSU was a perfect storm-sort-of-a-matchup. It's what happens when a team has no one that can guard a highly skilled big, coupled with the home team getting the benefit of call-after-call and hitting almost all of its multitude of free throws, and (last-but-not-least), the worst shooting performance of the season by OU, including the absolute worst possible performance by Vann, the reigning Big 12 Player of the Week.

We need to forget about this game as quickly as possible and move on to the remainder of the Big 12 schedule.

The first time I ever saw him was when TCU played in Norman one year. He literally shrieked at his players and officials all through the game - loud enough that I could hear him in the stands. I was surprised when KSU hired him. I can't figure out how he lured a player like Lee to KSU unless her parents are alums or something.

Lee was obviously a quality prospect coming out of high school but not ranked as that great of a player. She was only ranked as the #38 post per ESPN Hoopgurlz in 2018. Also she sit out 2019 due to injury and redshirted in 2020.

I guess we won't know how great she really is until we see her against who can match her physically.

Every time I see a player like her I'm reminded of how high school teams used to think they had struck gold if they had a player who was 6'!

My observations on the KSU game.

1. Lee is very good and played a great game. Congrats to her. At the same time, the refs called things pretty tight for her benefit, and she got away with a some pushes and 3-second calls.

2. We played poorly. Must have missed at least 10 wide open layups. Not talking about ones that KSU’s size affected - we missed what were basically layup drills. On one occasion Tot was streaking in for an open layup and simply lost the ball, forcing her to put up a circus shot. Maddie missed some bunnies. Emma, Skylar - pretty much everyone blew some easy shots. An extra 20 points would have helped.

3. We got off to the 15-0 deficit and that seemed to speed us up more than usual. We took quick shots and didn’t make them work on defense.

4. Think Jenny had a good strategy - looked like she wanted to draw Lee out with Skylar at the 5, but Skylar picked a bad time to be cold from beyond the arc. We had some luck working around Lee when she had to pick up Taylor away from the hoop - more of that would have been nice.

5. Best thing about the game was seeing Gabby get some points. Hope she can work herself back into the flow down the stretch, because we all know she can play and give us another scorer. I’m hoping her season isn’t like Doolittle’s wasted soph season for the men’s team a few years ago (after he missed the 1st semester).

6. Lee was dominant, but I wasn’t impressed with the other KSU players. Unfortunately I think they can play better, and I hope that doesn’t burn us in Norman.

7. Last, need to make sure this doesn’t carry over and turn into multiple losses. Two winnable home games this week - we should definitely handle the Pokes, and I think we can beat Texas if we play as well as we did against Baylor.

Boomer!
