2025 - 2026 Coaching Carousel

I'm not sure why this argument always turns to winning at the highest level.

Are they spending enough that a coach can finish in the top 5? Be Sweet 16 good? You'll have a hard time convincing me they aren't.
So Hall of Fame coach Jim Boeheim saying their budget is around $8 million currently and they need to be above $10 million to be competitive is definitely something. Not trying to convince you of anything but you have your right to have an opinion.

Boeheim is 81 years old, hasn't really coached in the true NIL-era, and likely knew his long time assistant coach was a pedo.

So no, I don't really care what he has to say on the matter.

if the Kentucky and Iowa State game continues to trend the way it is, next season is going to be a big one for Pope...team plays soft and lazy with that payroll of a roster.

Sure we could do better. but we still purchased plenty of talent to make the sweet 16 even, much less the tourney... we wont go anywhere kneecapping ourselves with a bad coach
No argument from me there, but Denny is doing this for the program not for Porter.
But we are in football? Women's basketball? Baseball? Softball? Gymnastics (men and women)? Men's golf?

If your answer is that we're still not spending enough in those sports, my response is that we're still winning.

I refuse to accept that men's basketball is the only sport at OU where funding would keep even an elite coach from winning. That is ridiculous.
Brent Venables had his put up or shut up moment in 2025 basically begging for more money and resources. They got him more money and significantly increased the staff of the football team. They hired a 6 person front office with Nagy. All the stuff they did with the Athlete Group is stuff they should look into for basketball.

Not really a good comparison to bring in non-revenue generating sports. The best players in football and men's basketball are making more individually than those individual rosters combined.

And as Denny mentioned, it's more than just money. They're looking at staff, arena/fan experience, etc. Porter should have been fired, but these changes are for the program. You could argue they should do these things for the right coach, but these things needed to happen at some point. Take this time to set up the infrastructure for the next guy. Even if Denny finds the next elite coach, without these changes, how long would they stay? We'd be selling the next guy on the arena is a dump, you'd get one less assistant coach than your conference peers, no GM, and bottom quarter in the conference with NIL funds.

Jim Nagy and his team had pretty much nothing to do with this year's roster. They basically took what was there and added Ott, which was a failed move. Going forward? Sure, they will get some credit. But they get no credit for what happened on the field in 2025.

I also don't recall BV "begging for more money and resources." Not only not begging, I don't recall him saying anything publicly about that all. Nothing about any of his struggles at OU have had anything to do with lack of money or resources. His big asks happened when he signed his first contract.

Well since only football and men's basketball are significant revenue generating sports, that would make any type of comparison tough, wouldn't it? I think the parrellel can still be drawn. And your numbers are off. I know OU baseball paid a decent sized NIL for last year's team to keep Kyson and a few others around. You might be surprised what some of the baseball players are getting. Not comparable to John Mateer and his $5M, but better money than some might think.

I'm also sick of people acting like LNC is some dilapidated shed in the back of somebody's yard. While it doesn't have a bunch of bells and whistles, it's fine. The players care more about the locker room, the practice facilities, and the fans. The first two OU is doing just fine with. The latter, well, it's a finicky bunch. Winning takes care of most of that problem.

I also think the extra assistant is just an excuse. How many coaches does it take to run a basketball practice with 12-15 kids? Does it really take 5? This stuff is just an easy excuse. I'm pretty sure Cal plays in an arena built in the 1930's. Same with Butler (1928, actually). Same with Minnesota.

Arizona's McKale Center was built in 1973. Hilton Coliseum in 1971. Allen Fieldhouse in 1955. Villanova plays in a facility built in 1986.

Some have undergone renovations, obviously, but the myth that everybody has much nicer facilities than us is just that, a myth. Some do for sure. But like I said, the players care more about the locker rooms and practice facilities. Why do they care about the seat color or how convenient the concourse bathrooms are?

Bv was definitely begging for $ and promises that were made to him upon agreeing to come here which were not fulfilled.

Mateer isn't getting 5 million

Tate Sandell? Keeping David Stone? Whether BV said anything publicly or not, the admin felt changes were needed. Just like Denny, who comes from a basketball school, feels OU needs now.

The job of assistant coaches has changed significantly. They have so much more basketball to watch. Not only are you scouting your opponent, your watching to see which players you may go after in the portal, and even tamper with to get here. Larger staff sizes are happening across football and basketball, so the people who do this everyday feel differently.

Even when the team was good and the arena was filled, it still wasn't an elite basketball atmosphere. All of the things Denny talked about doesn't hurt the program. It can only help. It's not my money, so I hope they get it done.

BV asked for those things year 1. To come to OU. He didn't ask for or get anything for 2025 that lead to the success on the field last year.

Mateer is getting $5M. It's been confirmed on another board.

He's not going to make it past next season if Kentucky is anywhere close to a #7 seed and doesn't make it past the first weekend. Their fans were clamoring for Calipari to pack his bags...be careful what you wish for.

Fair point on Sandell. Stone nearly left because Nagy tried changing his NIL, so I'm not giving him much credit for keeping a guy that was happy before he tried changing things.
