2025 - 2026 Coaching Carousel

I had heard self retiring was likely 2 months ago. I also heard JV was the likely coach in waiting but that’s not as solid. I would expect KU to look at national candidates, maybe some of the same candidates mentioned for UNC

Seeing all these other schools make moves on the coaching front while we sit idly by makes me so sad. Think of all the names this board has discussed over the past 24 months. So many have already been hired by power conference teams and are succeeding, and now the next group is being hired. All the while, we stand pat with a guy who loses two of every three conference games.

The On3 Main board said the NC St board mods are saying that...
247 NC St board saying the same - NC State Basketball VIP Note: Latest on Will Wade to LSU rumblings

..."As I reported Tuesday night, the push from LSU to land Will Wade has reached a different level and all signs point to him taking the position in Baton Rouge. In fact, one NC State source texted me at 8:08 p.m.: "Wade to LSU is a done deal. Trust me, it's done. Get ready.""
...
"As for the next option -- if/when the job opens up -- the name that I've been told would lead the search is Josh Schertz of Saint Louis. Sources tell me that the expectation is the buyout from Wade's contract would pay for Schertz's buyout at SLU after he signed a new deal earlier this month. Justin Gainey will also be a popular name, but Schertz is the top option and one that would have mutual interest in the Wolfpack."

The Athletic reported that Oats and Golden may be unlikely due to off-court concerns. They listed the other guys here, plus a couple others. Seemed to believe Lloyd might be the first choice for UNC but that his buyout (and May's) might make TJ the most likely choice. But it hurts UNC that all three of those guys are still playing right now. Definitely makes it a tight window to get it done quickly.

A few of those coaches come with massive buyouts: Lloyd's would be between $9 million and $12 million, depending on timing; Golden's would cost $16 million; and Oats' would cost $18 million until April 1, when it drops to $10 million. McCasland's buyout is just north of $10 million as well. May and Otzelberger have smaller buyouts, with May's believed to be around $7 million and Otzelberger's around $4 million.

18 mil for Oats and 16 mil for Golden

Great, LSU will leap frog us next year with Wade.

I thought he said, or somebody said, Baton Rouge wasn't a great spot for his family in their current situation?

I don't think that's a given. I bet they would do a more thorough search. Unlike UNC, KU has a pretty darn good track record of choosing coaches. I would love for them to settle for Vaughn because I can't stand that guy and am skeptical that he would do a good job.
I'm old enough to remember when they fired Ted Owens and hired Larry Brown. After Larry got them put on probation and left, they hired an unknown Roy Williams on Dean Smith's recommendation. When Roy went to Carolina, they hired Bill Self.

They've hit on 3 coaches in a row stretching over the last 40+ years.

Owens was clearly not in the same category as the past three, but he did lead Kansas to a pair of Final Four appearances and at least one other Elite Eight in his 19 years while winning about two-thirds of his games. Unlike Dave Bliss (for Billy Tubbs), Owens also left a nearly full cupboard for Larry Brown to work with. I believe three of the starting five of the 1986 Kansas Final Four team played for Owens as freshmen. Kansas has really only had one unsuccessful head coach - the guy who founded basketball, James Naismith. As such, there is a lot of pressure for them to get this hire right.

Oats will be gone this offseason. Bama doesn’t have near the support to keep him around.

Seems like a small positive that OU isn’t treading the current waters. Ou might not be top 10 of available jobs/about to be available jobs.

I agree we'd be on runt teat right now ;) but when Cincy fired their coach after being in bubble conversation for a minute and we didn't. I winced a little.

Had we acted then, we would have been shopping in the earlier coach market.
