Bob, not saying officiating is great in the men's game, but it is light years better than what the ladies get. Last night, virtually every call made was wrong, and numerous calls that were totally blatant were not called, both for and against us. Just as one example, the inside players on both teams were attempting to block shots from behind opposing players by extending their arms horizontally over the shoulders of the shooter and blocking the shot. That space above your body belongs to the offensive player and has since we have been playing with peach baskets. You can't interfere with vertical movement of an offensive player to attempt to block aa shot. About the easiest call to properly officiate, and it is normally and properly officiated in the men's game. Betts must have done that 10 times successfully and never got called for a foul. Beers did it a few times without a call as well. I don't want to type enough to discuss other issues. Last night, whether for or against us, they got virtually every call wrong in the first quarter. It was crazy. Just guessed on out of bounds issues, allowed players to body every player going in for a layup. My goodness, surely you can expect officials to protect kids going to the rim even if you are going to "let them play".
In any event, I agree with everyone that is saying that nothing about last night discourages me. Under Jenny, we have always gotten better as the year has gone on and I think that will be especially true this year with all the freshmen playing. I disagree with some on her, I was anything but disappointed by Chavez. By years end, I predict she will really be special and give this team a chance to be special. Just something about her. I think the Stewart kid might be special too.
