#6 OU vs #3 UCLA 9:30pm 11/10

Bob, not saying officiating is great in the men's game, but it is light years better than what the ladies get. Last night, virtually every call made was wrong, and numerous calls that were totally blatant were not called, both for and against us. Just as one example, the inside players on both teams were attempting to block shots from behind opposing players by extending their arms horizontally over the shoulders of the shooter and blocking the shot. That space above your body belongs to the offensive player and has since we have been playing with peach baskets. You can't interfere with vertical movement of an offensive player to attempt to block aa shot. About the easiest call to properly officiate, and it is normally and properly officiated in the men's game. Betts must have done that 10 times successfully and never got called for a foul. Beers did it a few times without a call as well. I don't want to type enough to discuss other issues. Last night, whether for or against us, they got virtually every call wrong in the first quarter. It was crazy. Just guessed on out of bounds issues, allowed players to body every player going in for a layup. My goodness, surely you can expect officials to protect kids going to the rim even if you are going to "let them play".

In any event, I agree with everyone that is saying that nothing about last night discourages me. Under Jenny, we have always gotten better as the year has gone on and I think that will be especially true this year with all the freshmen playing. I disagree with some on her, I was anything but disappointed by Chavez. By years end, I predict she will really be special and give this team a chance to be special. Just something about her. I think the Stewart kid might be special too.

Another thing to keep in mind is that UCLA is a team full of veterans. I think almost all of their players are seniors that have played together for several years of course they've got the two highly sought-after transfers starting as well. We have two seniors that can contribute and the rest are freshman and 1 sophomore. If players stay together and didn't portal out every year this would be very encouraging for the future but we will see how things play out. The drop off after a starter is pulled is noticeable and will probably hurt us all season but maybe we are not the only team like that? Chavez is such an upgrade from the point guards we've had in previous seasons it's not even comparable, really like her and excited about her potential when she gets acclimated to college pace.

Unless I missed it, one stat that hasn't been mentioned is turnovers. We only had 9 last night against the #3 team in the country. That's progress. We played with them in the first half and I agree with everyone that we get better as the year goes on. Chavez at the point is still something to watch. She'll find her groove and start making her shots. It just doesn't feel like the team as whole is clicking together yet though. When Zya and Alliyah start clicking and playing off each other, we're going to be really, really fun to watch.

And, of course, Sahara Williams is a Junior and a great player. Athletic, relentless, a team leader with a great attitude on and off the court.

Yes, i love Sahara. She's our dawg. I think her energy and ferocity fuels the team. So glad she's a Sooner. Wished she went after her midrange jumper more though.

UCLA plays #11 UNC in Vegas tonight. I guess we might see if they are really as good as they looked on Sunday.

UCLA 78 UNC 60, in a Game that reminded me a lot of our encounter. Close at half, then they used a strong 3rd quarter/early 4th to build a big lead & then basically held UNC at arms length for the rest of the game. Betts is going to be a load for anybody. 6’7” isn’t unheard of, but the way she moves at that size is.

I agree UCLA could be tough for anyone to beat this year, except maybe UConn. They've got experience and talent, and when Gardner and S. Betts get healthy they'll have depth too. If UCLA doesn't win it this year, idk if they ever will under Close. These 2 teams look better than South Carolina did against USC, IMO, so i think they're the 2 best teams right now.

I’ll be honest. I don’t trust UCLA’s guard play outside of Gianna Kneepkens, its just not great right now IMO. There are FAR better guard play at LSU and Texas then UCLA right now. Lauren betts struggles against physical Bigs. She struggled against Raegan when we played them, also she is not as good of a rebounder when she goes against a TRUE physical big or a big that is strong in general.

I think Texas can be the toughest team to face because they have MULTIPLE bigs that are strong, and their backcourt is generally really good and tall. Idk I expected UCLA to be GOOD GOOD but Idk me personally their Guard play just doesn’t move me much YET, but they are most definitely the most experienced team in America on paper. Their whole roster is basically almost all seniors. 8 of their 12 players on the roster are seniors so thats damn near the whole roster gone after this season.

UCLA is always at their best early and with the experience they have thuis year it is ever so much the case. But they hardly improve during the year and they usually fade at the end. They did finish pretty strong last year. I watched the Michigan-Notre Dame game and it was a massacre. The Irish have not appeared to replace the three key players they lost and Hidalgo can't do it by herself no matter how good. LSU and TCU look scary. LSU and Texas winning big but mostly against cupcakes. Don't know if Texas has enough outside offense. Our year will ride on the development of the five freshmen. If they grow enough to provide depth we will be a force to deal with. Our returning trio of Beers, Verhulst and William along with Chavez and Vann can play with anyone as they did against UCLA but they can't play 35 minutes at the pace we play and have anything left late in the game. USC depends on how recovered JuJu will be. UConn and South Carolina obvious top teams. Maryland and Duke may be among the top.
