7-foot Manyang still hobbled [Daily Oklahoman]

Just like a recruit we miss on.... He's garbage all the sudden. Kruger isnt taking junk...

Doesnt it get old be such a fairweather fan... We have chance to be really good. AK when healthy would help this team, he isnt a scrub.

No one called him junk, but anyone who's been associated with JUCO (raises hand) knows what the circuit is compared to 15 years ago.

Also, calling Sooner04 a fair-weather fan is pretty comical.

Broad stroke yes... But have you seen him play in person?

Let him get healthy and in shape and he'll surprise a lot of folks.

I think he will help when healthy, but when is that? He's been a question mark since last February when he mysteriously left his JUCO squad. Then we had people over the summer saying the injury wasn't that big of a deal...then a surgery...now a prolonged rest for a stress fracture. It's ok to be skeptical after all of those events.

No one is blaming Kruger, quit being hyper-sensitive.

The part I don't understand is that Coach Kruger has been quoted as saying how much this guy will help the team and be a difference maker. Lon doesn't seem to be the type to just say that for no reason. He never did that with guys like Arent or Bennett in the way that he has done with AK.

We might not find out the answer with this type of injury but I think it is a bigger blow than some are seemingly thinking.

This team is going to be really good with or without him but his size alone could add another wrinkle to what looks to be an already very diverse team. Does him being out mean that they cant win a national championship? No, but they have a better chance at winning every single game if they have the option to use him. I was looking forward to seeing him play and will be a little disappointed if I don't get that chance.

Sure. Jucos are instant impact all the time but a legit sought after 7ft center is impactful. Sure you guys hate Cole, hate manyang, hate walker... Wood can't do this or that...

Coach Kruger knows what he wants and gets it. All serve a purpose. We'll see I trust Kruger, we are ranked #8 and are trending upward.

The height of a player doesn't matter...its the arm length of a player. No one plays with the top of their head.

I was at practice on Thursday. Manyang was shooting set shots and free throws with a manager in the practice court.
He later came to the main court as an observer. While he was next to Jamuni, they stood side by side and compared vertical reach... Manyang's reach was about 2" taller.

I hope that he gets that foot healed, because he sure looks like he could be a player.

If he doesn't have a redshirt, "shutting him down" makes no sense. With Spangler gone next year, why would you not get him all the experience he can?

I don't put near as much stock in his potential as others around here. If he were a skilled seven-footer with rim protecting abilities he wouldn't have been slumming it at a JUCO.

In my eyes he's a project, a flyer, and if he can contribute five fouls a game then that's great. And if not, no big deal.

Now he's got a busted foot. So I'd sit him for the year.

Didn't he go to juco due to grades? 247 rated him as a four star recruit, third best juco player and best center in juco. Minnesota, ASU and Kansas were interested in him. I don't get why you are so down on him. OU passed on Ibaka's brother to take him. His cousin was pretty good. I think he was reasonably highly regarded coming out of high school.

I am not expecting him to be better than Spangler but I think he can and will help OU. If nothing else he lets the guys practice against a 7 footer.

I'm a bigger fan of Manyang than many people on this board. I think he could really help the Sooners if he can heal and get into shape by the time the conference games begin.

I think he was recruited to OU thinking he had a good chance of starting. The one practice I saw him play in June, I was impressed. The kid is big and reasonably athletic for someone so tall. If he gets into shape and understands his assignments, he can be a real intimidator defensively.

AK is not a "stiff" on the floor. He can play, and would be in the rotation. JMHO

if he was 100% I have no doubt that he would be the starting center

Manyang has had a strange and interesting path to OU. He graduated from HS in Minnesota from Duluth East in 2012. He wasn't allowed to play in the state playoffs because someone reported seeing him smoking (???).

Manyang was ruled ineligible before the Section 7 tournament when he allegedly was seen smoking on a street corner by an employee of Woodland Hills, a Duluth facility for youth where Manyang resides. Tobacco use is a violation of MSHSL rules.

After almost signing with Minnesota, he played a year of prep school ball at Potter's House Christian School in Florida graduating in 2013. I think his grades weren't good enough to get into a D1 school after his final year of HS in Minnesota..... I read somewhere that he had some "problems" his HS freshman or sophomore year in Minnesota. Maybe that's why he was living in that Duluth facility.......

After Potter's House, he went to Indian Hills juco for 2 years. As most of you know, he didn't play for part of the year last year for some reason, but later returned to the team. His coach at Indian Hills, John Wardenburg, still had this to say about him when he committed to OU which was before he left the team for a month in the middle of the season.

"He's a 7-foot kid, about 250 pounds and his best days of basketball are ahead of him," Wardenburg said. "He can step out and shoot it a little bit, rebounds and runs the floor well.

"I believe he will be or is ranked if not the top junior college recruit in the nation this year he's at least in the top five. He's for sure the best post guy in the nation."

This guy was a stud that the Sooners were happy to sign. Ironically, the way I read it, he still technically has a redshirt year available because prep school doesn't start your 5 year eligibility clock.

Nice breakdown on AK's stops along the way to OU, usedtobe1! I hope you're right about the redshirt. If he can't go this season, that may be the best option.
