All things Blake Griffin thread Rookie Year edition

Re: Blake Griffin is the second-best player in L.A. >>> O.C. Register

Saying that Blake is a far better athlete than Dwight Howard is possibly the most ridiculous thing ever stated in this or any other forum. Dwight is a freak of nature and there isnt anybody in the world that is a far better athlete than him.

So my opinion is the "most ridiculous thing ever stated in this or any other forum?" You're pretty quick to hurl insults at anyone whose opinions differ from your own; but I think I'll stand by my assertion that Blake is a better athlete than Dwight Howard. Did you watch Blake play last night, by the way?

When they were drafted:
Code:
Name D. Howard	Blake Griffin
Height w/o Shoes 6' 9" 6' 8.5"
Height w/shoes 6' 10.25"	6' 10"
Weight 240 248
Wingspan 7' 4.5" 6' 11.25"
Reach 9' 3.5" 8' 9"
Body Fat NA 8.2
No Step Vert 30.5 32
No Step Vert Reach 11' 10" 11' 5"
Max Vert 35.5 35.5
Max Vert Reach 12' 3" 11' 8.5"
Bench 7 22
Agility 11.21 10.95
Sprint 3.14 3.28

I would like to add that D Howard's Bench is probably superior to Blake's currently, and that his max vert. reach is closer to 12'-10" I'd guess (based on his effortless dunk on a 12' goal.

I think Blake is quicker (agility significantly quicker), and I know he has softer hands/ more coordination, but in leaping and strength I think Howard has him.

Re: Blake Griffin is the second-best player in L.A. >>> O.C. Register

In Blake Griffin's first NBA game he exceeded Pau Gasol's career averages in:

Points 20 > 18.8
FG % 57.1 > 52.1
Rebounds 14> 9
Assists 4 > 3.2

And he did this vs a top tier team with Camby and Aldridge inside. Wait until he plays scrub teams with weak inside games.

He is the second best player in LA. Period. No contest.

Yeah, because there is nothing silly about comparing a one game sample to an 8 year career.

Griffin is absolutely a stud and he may prove to be better than Gasol this year but he hasn't proved it yet. That said I fully expect him to be an All Star this year if he stays healthy.

Thanks for providing those numbers. Some of them were a little surprising to me, others were almost exactly what I expected.

Look, I am in no way trying to say that Blake, as a rookie who's played exactly one NBA game, is a better NBA player than Dwight Howard. Like abd and the Kansas fan have so eloquently stated, Howard IS a freak of nature (Superman) and one of the top players in the NBA. My point was – and is – that Blake Griffin will also have a great NBA career; but I believe he will dominate more on great athletic ability as opposed to Howard's super strength and size (and yes, he's athletic also).

In my opinion, Griffin's superior agility, quickness, coordination and softer hands (your evaluation), trumps (in overall athletic ability) Howard's slight edge in strength and leaping ability.

That's not at all what your original post said. Your OP said that Griffin was "by far a better athlete". Now that the numbers show that he's not 'by far' the better athlete you are changing up.

I don't think many would disagree with this last post you just made and which is what I said in my first response to your OP. Griffin is probably the better all around athlete but the gap isn't huge.

Thanks for the info DS.

It'd be interesting to see what their numbers are today; I believe it would provide better insight as opposed to when Dwight was just fresh out of high school without (presumably) a rigorous training program.

Since we are looking at individual games here is one from the 2008 NBA Playoffs.

36 Points
70% from the Field
8-8 from the Free throw line
16 Rebounds
8 Assists
3 Blocks
and that was in the Playoffs.

Again I state when it is all said and done Blake will go down as the better player if he stays healthy, but right now as a rookie he is not better than an 11 year pro who is a 2 time NBA champion and 3 time NBA all star

Sometimes I think you're actually worse than abd, and I've seen Christmas turkeys that are less anal retentive than that guy. Here's my last word, as I've grown extremely weary of this argument: I dropped "far better" but I'm still convinced Blake is the "better" athlete. Live with it.:)

you know, its a shame they don't take combine measurements every preseason. I would like to see how guys improve over there careers and we could put this petty arguing behind and have a definitive answer

LOL. I'm living with it because I actually agree with most of what you said in that post. :)

stoops4pres makes a great point in terms of Howard's measurements. While he was explosive coming out of HS it wasn't close to what he is now or what he would have comparably been at 2 years older (when Griffin was measured).

Re: Blake Griffin is the second-best player in L.A. >>> O.C. Register

Wow overreaction. Think we should let Blake play a full season before we start comparing him to guys like Pau Gasol and Dwight Howard.

Re: ** Offical Blake Griffin vs Trailblazers thread**

So do Baron Davis and Eric Gordon realize that Blake is on the court? It seems like Baron, in particular, avoids passing to Blake...

They need to get rid of Davis, quick. He's a selfish son of a gun. Gordon and Foye seemed to avoid Blake too. They'll either have to change or leave town.

Re: Blake Griffin is the second-best player in L.A. >>> O.C. Register

It's really a shame Blake decided to quit basketball and move on to the NBA.

** Official Blake Griffin vs Warriors thread*

There is a NBA league pass free preview on COX right now, so you can watch Blake on channel 653 (at least in OKC area).

Right now
7 points (3-6 FG, 1-4 FT), 4 rebounds (3 offensive), 1 assist

Is doing a good job of drawing fouls down low but can't make his free throws.

Re: ** Official Blake Griffin vs Warriors thread*

The free preview is not working for me.

Re: ** Official Blake Griffin vs Warriors thread*

I am sorry Tony, it works fine for me.

Re: ** Official Blake Griffin vs Warriors thread*

Blake picks up his 3rd foul with 6 minutes left in the 2nd quarter. Good chance that could be the last we see of him this half.

7 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists.

Re: ** Official Blake Griffin vs Warriors thread*

Sam, here's hoping you are going to start eighty more threads on Blake this year, 'cause that would really be awesome...
