Another site is saying we are a finalist for a guard transfer that is in the portal. (last name is Russell) Some kid from Louisiana U, who averaged about 17 points per game.

I thought we already were full for next year. Is Rick not going to be on schollie?

Anyone know anything about the potential new player and how we would have room. Apparently, he had a zoom call with us in the last couple days.

Weird. Maybe he was planning on using Rick’s ship? Maybe MJ is in bigger trouble than we thought?

CoachTalk will have to chime in...

but I doubt this is anything at this point. With Issanza back, officially, in the fold, you have no space. Sounds like OU tried with the kid before the Issanza news came out.

From reading the article, it sounds like Ohio State to me.

Forgot about that. Maybe.

After poking around OSCN, there is a Marvin Garone Johnson Jr, that has been charged with the following:

Count # 1. Count as Filed: DI7, DRIVING A MOTOR VEHICLE WHILE UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF DRUGS, in violation of 47 O.S. 11-902(A)(4)
Date of Offense: 06/24/2021
Count # 2. Count as Filed: DU9I, POSSESSION OF CONTROLLED DANGEROU SUBSTANCE, in violation of 63 O.S. 2-402
Date of Offense: 06/24/2021
Count # 3. Count as Filed: DL1, DRIVING WITH LICENSE CANCELLED/SUSPENDED/REVOKED, in violation of 47 O.S. 6-303(B)
Date of Offense: 06/24/2021

If this is too personal, someone feel free to delete or I will

Well it’s public record so anyone can access it, so I don’t think you should feel bad about posting.

As for Fats, I have no idea to what extent we are truly in on him, but if the coaches want him and he wants to come here, the scholarship issue will work itself out one way or another.

Assuming these charges are valid, I would be shocked if MGA is still part of our future plans.

He’s also assumed to be innocent until proven guilty, of course. So, that’s pure speculation at this point. I hope he’s innocent because I think he can help us this season.

dui with some weed is really not that big of a deal .. i doubt this gets him booted off the team ..

Has he been practicing?

He was in OU's June 29th tweet

Anyway, since the charges are misdemeanors, I assume not much will come of this and that the roster is set (as we thought yesterday).

I'm not sure I would just blow off a DUI and weed. Here is a recent local case that a family that would disagree with you that DUI with weed is not a big deal.

But Marvin Johnson's issue may be that he is a new player who hasn't "earned" the right to mess up, and he is coming to OU and getting in trouble right in the middle of another troubling case within the athletic department in the news surrounding marijuana. Don't get me wrong, I know the two aren't related at all and not even close to the comparison, but as in a basketball game, sometimes the punishment for the second act or the retaliation is not fair either.

Plus Moser being a new coach with a roster full of new players may want to take action to set an example of what he will or won't tolerate. But we don't know the details. He could have just been sitting in his car smoking weed, and since he had the keys in his possession, an ambitious officer could charge him with DUI.

Personally, I don't think he is booted, but I wouldn't be surprised by firm or extreme consequences either.

did he hit someone that i am not aware of ??

a dui can be terrible but he didn't hit any or kill anyone ...

That is EXACTLY why a DUI is terrible whether he actually hits somebody or not.....because driving that way severely increases the chances of doing just that.

doubt he was driving drunk. until i see his BAC, yawn. don't get strike 2 though...

i agree a dui is a really bad look but it is not going to get someone kicked off the team ...

A DUI's a terrible thing, but sadly many younger people, who too often feel invincible (and sort of figure everyone else is too) don't yet have a handle on just how bad it is (heck, too many older folks don't either).

Am I correct that MJ has just one year of eligibility? If so, that changes the equation a bit for me. It doesn't make the DUI and pot possession any worse (nor would they be less bad so if he were an incoming freshman), but as a senior, he should definitely know better and since he's basically a passing ship in the night, I'm not sure the risk of retaining him is worth it. A freshman could be taught a lesson and we'd still benefit from his maturation and growth and the contributions that followed -- I don't know that a one-year player is worth the risk and the hit to the program's rep if he's allowed to stay.

That said, I'm not 100% sold on the above stance, but it's the direction in which I'm currently leaning. If MJ does get to stay, he should definitely be on the very shortest of leashes.

This is now the second player in just a couple of days that reportedly has OU in the final 3-4 schools.

Wouldn’t it be odd that BOTH of them has OU listed if they don’t even know OU doesn’t have an available spot? Do they list OU just to have another school listed? Unlikely if both of them have done so.

Makes me think that the coaching staff has been engaged with them and hasn’t told them “no spots available” if they decide to pick OU. If that is the case, the question is where does the scholarship come from if one commits.

If we want them, there is no chance the scholarship issue won’t be worked out. That kind of thing happened even before the portal, and in this day and age, it’ll become even more common. That’s not to say we will get either of these guys, but I don’t think we’d miss on them because of scholarship issues.
