What I've heard as a rule of thumb is that it takes 3 first round draft picks to win the NC.

But suppose it becomes obvious that we're never going to have that kind of personnel; are you going to quit following the Sooners, or are you just going to keep whining and *****ing every year?

As for me, I just enjoy seeing what we can do with what we've got. If all you do is focus on the destination, you miss all the excitement ( the thrill of victory, the agony of defeat, or de knee) along the way.

Who is whining? Is Sherri whining when she says her goal is a national championship? I happen to agree with her and it appears others here agree with her as well. If you don't, no problem.

Sherri's not whining - her Write Space and Time made that clear. But it sure sounds to me like you are, because we didn't reach your destination.

Please tell me that whether or not we reached our highest goal is not your only measure of whether a season was worth watching. Did you not find anything redeeming or inspiring about this season?

I haven't said I was upset with this season. In fact, I've said just the opposite. I think we were lucky to have made the SS with the injuries we had. That was as good as we could have hoped for.

I don't know why my position bothers you. I do not apologize for wanting to win a NC. Sherri has made it clear that is her goal too. We all know what it will take to get there, better players. Will Sherri be able to do what North Carolina did by signing a huge class? I keep hoping so.

We might. If a few layups go down, we probably beat UCONN with Dales, even thought they had more talent (at least on the inside).

We should have been in the championship game (we were favored ) in the year we had drob, ny, AT and abi. If we get in the championship game, we might have won.

Every once in a while, a team is so talented in the girls game, something has to go wrong for them not to win, (UCONN occasionally and Baylor this year), but usually you have to have a lot of things go right at the same time and also get a little lucky to win. Who do you draw in the tournament, injuries, and a few lucky bounces seem to decide the champion.

I don't know if we will ever win, but we certainly could. Some, maybe all, will disagree, but if we don't lose Maddie, Whit and KK to injury this year, we could have won it this year. By years end, we would have been a substantially different and better team than one that made the sweet 16.

Glad to hear the first paragraph. Your position bothered me because up until this post, the impression I got was that winning the National Championship was your ONLY measure of success. And the only goal you seem to have. I find it really depressing to listen to those who are so obsessed with defining what went wrong that they can't find any enjoyment in what went right.

It seems to me that attendance has dropped at LNC since the twins left. I have no proof but suspect that fans at that time had hope for a NC but that hope has since fallen along with attendance. I also suspect if Sherri landed a couple of big-time recruits capable of putting us in the NC hunt, interest and attendance would pick up again.

We can hope!!! :ez-roll:

More interest and attendance would be nice and I'm sure the girls would appreciate it, but personally, I don't have much use for people who only show an interest when they think an NC is in the near future - or any sport.

Without the national championships, I doubt Memorial Stadium would have more than 50,000 on a typical fall Saturday.

You are so right, I was at that game, and OU missed 9 lay ups in that game by my count.

A game for the ages. Dales and Caufield outscored the vaunted Taurasi-Bird backcourt, but we got eaten up by their forwards (none of whom were over 6-2). What few remember about that season is that we had a really good center in Jennifer Cunningham, who we lost to ACL injury in the preseason. I remember Cunningham scoring in the 20's on North Carolina her junior year. If we'd had her healthy for a senior year, I think we would have won it all.

We'll never know, since the football NC's started almost 60 years ago.

People who are going to attend games in years when they think we will might win a championship but stay home if they think we aren't are bandwagon fans, just as much as people who support different teams based on their chance for a NC.

I would rather win championships and have the seats full of bandwagon fans than no title and a bunch of empty seats.

Or we could have good fans like ISU and have full seats with or without championships.

You can't keep the bandwagon fans away. But if they only value the championships, they miss the point, entirely.

The goal is for a team to be the best they can be. If luck and skill and the stars align, they will be the best they can be and win a championship. But if they are the best they can be and don't win a championship, they still have every right to be proud of themselves and their season. But a fan who only value's championships will never understand that.

Pretty much! He has talent all over the court and his reserves would start at a lot of places. But, as I have said previously, you don't need all 5 starters to be great players, just 2. IF Sherri could land 2 Stewart-Lewis type players to go along with 3 other really good players, we would certainly have a chance of winning it all. Without those type of players, it is unlikely we will ever be able to beat the UCONNs, Notre Dames, Tenn, and Stanfords of the world for the title.

If you disagree with what I've said (and apparently you do) give me a list of the teams which have won a NC in the last 10 years and let's see if they all have some great players or not.

Did Baylor have any Big Mac All-Americans in 2005?

The definition of an elite player can be interesting. Doesn't OU now have about four or five players who were All-American on some form of team: WCA, McDonald's, etc. Hand and Kornet were something or other All-Americans, as was Griffin. Sophia Young was nothing and was pretty good.

Meanwhile, I've seen annoucers say that Geno has been disappointed by the development of Heather Buck and Kiah Stokes. Apparently, not all stars are equal. I wonder if they might have done better elsewhere?

Some of the best in the profession were complete unknowns coming out of HS. Then, if they become college stars, we need "that type of player." Well, we had four McDonald's All-Americans at one time. It just didn't seem to fit well that they all wanted to play the same position. We had three centers and one power forward who would have been better off with a high-post center. It didn't fit.

Tennessee gets as many superstar high school recruits as does UConn. It's just that Geno is better at getting the maximum out of them. Rutgers got a whole bunch of sensational recruits, and I'm not sure they're still in NJ.

It's about more than just great players. Let's consider something:

If OU had Whitney, Maddie, Kaylon, and a healthy Cloman and UCon had been missing four of its top seven players, where might each have finished this year? Does OU make it further than the Sweet Sixteen? Does UConn make it to the Sweet Sixteen?

OU may well win a national title next year or the following. We have enough. It just has to have the confidence and to fit.

What do you mean by "fit"?
