Article on Tay Thomas

This years team is not going to win a big 12 title. Kansas is going to win it this year. The following year we could but not next year. Outside of Buddy, no one else would start for KU next season. All Kansas did was replace 2 one and done guys with 2 one and done guys. And losing Hornbeak was a huge blow to our bench.

Shall we go back a year and examine your projections for OU before last season?
Hell, let's exam your projections for OU a month into last season. You had them finishing second in the conference all along, right?

You are right, but we did lose to Baylor in the big 12 tournament and North Dakota State in the ncaa tournament. And North Dakota St lost to SD st by 20 the following game.

Question: Do they hand out banners for finishing 2nd place during the regular season of the conference?

So my point is this. Do we want a big 12 championship banner and perhaps a final 4 banner or do we want to finish 2nd in the big 12 regular season??? And Thomas redshirting this season gives us a chance to go the distance the following season.

And OU is going to finish in the top 4 of the Big 12. The big 12 was overrated last year(evidence shown during the ncaa tournament) but the league is going to be way worse overall. OU, KU, Texas and ISU should all be better but the rest will take a hit. TCU should be better but who cares about a team that can't win a single conference game. We are going to be good enough with or without Thomas to finish 2nd in the big 12 again this year but were not going to dethrone KU. And I personally would like OU to be the first team to dethrone KU which could happen next year with Thomas.

Only problem with waiting until next year is that Buddy will probably be gone. He is skyrocketing up draft boards with his performances at the Kevin Durant and LeBron James camps. We have a better chance of dethroning Kansas with Buddy than without, no matter if the other guys get another year of experience.

I know that Buddy leaving is a huge possibility but even if he leaves we will still have a better shot the following year. We could land Trier. But even if we don't, Cousins will return and move into Buddy's spot and at the rate he's progressing each year...We may not take a hit at all. And I wouldn't put it pass anything that the other Woodard graduates early from Tulsa and transfers in and plays immediately.

Right now...Our bench is weak. Its extremely short, young and inexperience. And even if we lose Buddy...The difference of Woodard, Cousins, Spangler, Thomas, Lattin, Booker, and Buford from this year to the following year will be way better then the team with Buddy this season. And if Buddy stays...wow...we have a team that could win it all.

How is our bench short?

If we start Woodard/Cousins/Hield/Buford/Spangler.....that gives us the following on the bench, assuming Thomas isn't eligible:

Walker - 6'1
Booker - 6'4
Bennett - 6'8
Lattin - 6'9
McNeace - 6'10

Young and unproven? I agree. But that is a fairly deep bench, with some good height.

There is a 13 man roster and you named 5 on the bench when we could have 8 the following year so that makes it short. And not to mention..one injury and its even shorter. And theres always injuries.

You can't play 13 guys. Nobody does. You really can't even play 12.

And if Cole would be part of the 13 next year, he needs to be #11 on my list this year.

I just don't consider our bench short, compared to history and what other teams will have. Of course a major injury would hurt, but it would hurt next year as well.

If you don't consider ours a short bench then there really is no such thing as a short bench unless you have only an 8 scholarship roster. Freshmen bigs that aren't rated at the top of a top 100 list rarely make that big of an impact their first year. And we have 3 on our bench. And we have a JC pg that wouldn't be on our roster had the 1st one that committed to us qualified so we don't really know what he will bring.

I would consider our bench average. Or relatively normal.

A short bench, to me, is like the year we had one guard, one, single guard, that came off the bench. That was Newell. I think we had a couple other seasons under Capel, or maybe LK's first year, where we basically played 8 guys. We will play more than 8 guys this year. Could the depth be a little better? Sure, I guess. But Kelvin played with a 10-11 man roster just about every single season.

We will have a strong deep bench this season. If Thomas plays and McNeace redshirts, Kruger can still go 10 deep with quality players. Players like Lattin and Buford could start for lower half Big 12 teams this year. Booker will be good enough to start for about anyone outside of the top 25. Walker will be good enough to do the job required of him. Even players like Bennett and the walkon Mankin have shown up as much improved.

I think most teams evolve to a "short" bench by tournament time. Everyone gets a chance in December until they settle on a rotation. I would be surprised to see OU with more than 9 in the rotation by year-end. Maybe a couple of others get some token minutes at the end of the game.

Last year we had 9 in the rotation with Bennett getting 9 minutes/game getting the least time.

I agree with your view on the bench.

I'm curious...which teams in the big 12 would Lattin and Buford start for?

They wouldnt start for TCU next season...not over Fields and Shepherd.
The 3 teams that one of them could defiantly start for is Texas Tech, Baylor and OU.

You have to be kidding me right? I'm sure they wouldn't start for some Big 12 teams. But TCU?

Their team may suck but Shepherd and Fields would both start at Center for ou this season.

And also, TCU has 2 post players that transferred in last season that had to sit out. One was a 4 star center out of high school. Its going to be interesting to see if Trent Johnson can win with his whole team coming back and the addition of the 3 players that sat out last year b/c they transferred in...The 2 post players and Trey Zeigler.

When will we get a determination on his eligibility? I'm tired of waiting!

Whenever the NCAA wants to rule. Could be tomorrow or could be December! Take a number and get in line just like the dmv!
