If you're going to blame anyone...blame Jones.

Like I said, some people feel the need to have one person to blame.

That loss was a team effort, with plenty of blame to go around, but if I were given the chance to retroactively reverse a single play in the game, it was definitely be Bell's fumble at the 1. In fact, I'd have kept Bell's butt on the bench and never had him enter the game and that's not hindsight; I said as much when I saw him entering the game.

After KSU had scored a defensive touchdown, Landry Jones had marched the team right down the field, and on the preceding play, Williams (I think it was Williams, might have been Whaley) had rushed eight yards from the nine-yard-line to the one. We had all the momentum going our way, and I truly think we'd have gone on to win handily (two or three TDs) if we'd scored there.

There was no need whatsoever for the Bell-dozer at that point in the game -- we had the Cats on their heels -- and Bell's unforced fumble gave K-State a huge boost.

That said, Bell didn't lose the game for us. Neither did Heupel, who never should have brought Bell in. They both contributed to the loss, but no one person did us in.

It doesn't matter who is coaching...Saban, Stoops, Miles...or God...players do those things, your chances of winning are slim to none.

I am no Biblical Scholar but I suspect if God were coaching, He could prevent the players from making mistakes if He chose to do so.

I agree. Personally, I am not a big fan of the Bell Dozer. I have nothing against Bell but to me the package tells the defense what is going to happen. Granted teams apparently can't stop it but I am not sure they could stop Landry Jones running it up the middle either. Jones is also a big guy even if he isn't as big as Bell. With Jones under certain in an I formation wtih two tight ends, you could run play action, QB Sneak, the fullback, naked bootleg, a quick slant, etc.

I think people worried about quarterbacks getting hit too much. They take violent hits in the passing game, I don't think a sneak here or there is too much risk.

But questioning the effectiveness of it is ludicrous. I've never seen a "specialty" package work as often as it has. People know one of 2-3 plays is coming, and they still can't stop it.

You're right...He seemed to win when he was backing Tebow

Jones forced the coach's hand. Its his inability to score in the redzone that keeps the belldozer around. If Jones would have scored when Green was wide open...I don't believe that Bell would have came in the next time down.

Exactly...and it worked against us...we knew what Klein was going to do and we couldn't stop him either.

I do believe Bell is coming into a great situation next season. Jones is breaking in all of these receivers/TE's and OU will return all of them except for Brown. Bell will also be behind a veteran OL that is only losing one lineman and their getting Evans back next season as well. Also he only loses Whaley in the run attack.

So when Bell takes over next year, the experience around him should help him be a huge threat not only with his legs but with his arm as well.

I worry about Bell's passing next year. I know we haven't gotten to see much in practice, but the guy has always been a step behind in the passing game. I'm wondering if we don't change the offense up a bit next year. Nothing drastic, but maybe some zone read stuff, and some run game package stuff, with a simpler passing structure?

Its hard to tell what kind of arm he has...he doesn't come in the game to throw...and to think the kid can't throw just b/c he comes in to strictly run the ball maybe jumping the gun. He's got this year, and next off-season to work on his mechanics.

Don't worry, the football talk will disappear when the basketball season tips off. The summer months are so slow, members throw in an occasional thread on other topics to keep the board alive. They're usually frowned on during the season.

I"ve got an idea. How about giving us a hand by starting a basketball thread? I can assure you that the rest of us will join in.
