How great is it that in the last two games, against maybe the most difficult opponents we have played, and now with Newell gone, our bench has had multiple guys step up and provide energy and scoring when we desperately needed it?

CJ played tremendous against ORU. Tyler Neal dominated Arkansas from deep. Honore and Blair provided really solid minutes off the bench as well. Arent contributes defensively but just doesn't have much touch around the rim for offensive putbacks.

I am especially proud to see these guys significantly help out when all last year and throughout the offseason, we had multiple fans, especially on this board, whine about how CJ, Neal and Blair weren't worthy of major D-1 scholarships and should not be on the team.

The negativity of fans about those three was absolutely shocking. Frankly, I think it is mostly because there are a lot of fans on here that HATE Jeff Capel, with such a personal, burning passion, that they want to believe that every single move he ever made was a mistake and bad for the team.

I don't know if losing Newell had anything to do with it. But it's definitely encouraging to see our back up players respond so well. Makes you wonder if there was more to Calvin's departure than we know? There had to be a reason why he was not necessarily one of the first players off the bench in every game. Is it possible the attitude Garyeb2 reported was having an effect on the other players? That was certainly the case with TMG.

NOTE: That's pure conjecture on my part, and it may not be a fair appraisal of what, if anything, was going on behind the scenes.

I'm not saying that it did. Just saying that with Newell's absence, we needed other guys to step up and fill that scoring void, and it's certainly happened thus far. Really impressed with how Neal, etc. have responded.

I realize that after I made my post, OUhoops11.

Capel hasn't been treated half as rough as Sampson was by a certain faction of our fans. It's not even close.

I disagree. There are a lot posters on here who absolutely refuse to admit Capel did anything even remotely positive while he was here, and assign credit for all of our wins to anyone but Capel. They act like he would't be qualified to coach a 7 year old girls team, and further make numerous assertions about his lack of ethics. Surprised some on here haven't claimed he was in on it with Jerry Sandusky.

I guess I have missed the ethics comments. I was as critical of Capel as anyone but I personally thought he came across as a good guy. I don't know him so it is hard to say whether he is or is not a good guy. With that said, he did not do a good job as OU's head basketball coach. He never really exceeded expectations and failed to live up to them in virtually every year but one but I don't see how that makes him unethical or unqualified to be a basketball coach.

That's because Sampson was (somewhat rightfully) viewed as a traitor.
Most people wanted Capel out.

Just hilarious. Its people like you who keep bringing it up and just can't let it go. Why not focus on Kruger, and what's going on now, with all the success and excitement? Do you have a Capel fetish? Are you his uncle? I have nothing against the guy personally at all... But I tend to be more fond of coaches of OU that aren't abject failures and land us on probation, and leave the program in a cess pool. I can assure you I would have loved him if he knew how to coach, had won, and didn't cheat. Again, I think people don't hate Capel, they love OU basketball. And Capel was the worst thing that ever happened to this program.. But go ahead, keep bring him up. Capel Capel Capel.....Geez

No, this was long before he departed.

They used to trash Sampson after victories, for pete's sake.

If Sampson had delivered two seasons like Capel's last two campaigns, that crowd would have shown up at his house with torches.

:facepalm:D:D

Capel gets brought up on almost every thread by the same 12 or so posters, yet you blame Sperry for bringing him up. You either don't read the board, or you are just blinded with the same bitterness. If you need me to, I will point you towards at least 5 threads recently posted in, where Capel had nothing to do with the subject, yet someone had to mention him/bash him/etc.... I gurantee you none of it was done by Sperry......

"I have nothing against the guy but ..." (paragraph of Capel rage omitted). This is the same crap you see on pretty much every thread on the board.

Given that you joined us a scant eight months ago, you'll have to take my word for it. Compared to Sampson's treatment here, Capel's been given a free ride.

At least Capel's critics do bother to offer such preliminary comments as "I have nothing against the guy, but..." or "He seems like a nice enough guy, but..."

The Sampson haters bothered with no such relatively civil opening remarks. They went right for the jugular, and they did it while Sampson was at OU, winning 20+ games year in and year out.

Any coach that takes over a successful program and leads it to losing seasons two years in a row is going to catch grief. It's naive to think otherwise. Ignore it; it'll fade away -- certainly a lot more quickly than the enmity for Sampson did.

I have been around OU basketball message boards for much longer than 8 months. I've been active on sooner basketball websites since roughly 2003. I do remember Sampson's critics. Many of them were very similar to the Capel critics. Some of them are probably the same posters under different names.

I still have not forgiven Billy for what happen in his 1st season......

Well maybe I have. :o

I don't really remember those three guys getting all that much criticism, to be honest.

You don't remember Carl Blair getting criticism? Click on abd's profile, then past posts. Shouldn't take long to find what I'm referring to considering how quiet he has been since OU is actually winning games.
