in todays Oklahoman about possibility of missing the NCAAs. He mentioned its 9 years since last Big 12 title, 8 years since a final four. and 5 years since a sweet sixteen. He called OU a once-proud program. Looks like he is spot on.

I can’t find it on the newspaper’s website. Anyone have a link?

Tramel is SPOT on. Sherri has got lazy and just drawing a paycheck. For the money we are paying I think we should get a LOT more from the head coach and the staff. I used to be proud of it but now I don’t even watch all the games.

Yes, I agree that Tramel is right on, but I don’t think Coach is lazy. It’s the best she can do with what she’s got. It’s all about recruiting the talent. Ironic that Coale and Fenelly, who drove Jody Conrad and Marsha Sharp out of the business, are now being supplanted. Maybe next year’s excellent class, together with this year’s freshmen can turn the corner.

Tango, she’s been lazy in recruiting fo 5 years and that’s why the last 4 or 5 years have been ugly and average or below average. Doing the “best she can do with what she’s got” is not an excuse when SHE is responsible for what she’s got. It’s all on her, getting 1.2 million per year and SHE is the head coach its all on her and all her fault. She and her staff have gotten lazy and not gone and gotten the talent she once did. One year of missing on top talent may be just a bad year but 5 years of missing on top talent is laziness - pure and simple.

Glad Berry is seeing it like I have for the last few years. I think that 1.2 million dollars could get someone in that wants to do the complete job of being a head coach.

Your view assumes that any women's basketball coach at Oklahoma who put forth sufficient effort could get the elite recruits necessary to take us to the Final Four. I think you are the one with crimson colored glasses.

I agree with this totally. I have been trying to make this point for some time.

Actually, she could at least fill out the scholarships. By the way, Mulkey seems to be able to recruit to Waco, TX of all places so it can be done. Somehow they are getting players to Starkville, MS these days. There is also the fact that she used to recruit elite players to Norman. It is sad when OU is second fiddle in Oklahoma.

So. If we had fourteen people by adding five more the quality of EJ, we would be successful?

Mississippi State: their stars are from Mississippi and Brenham, TX The girl from Brenham may not have qualified elsewhere. There were some problems with her recruitment. Seems like she began by committing to Louisville.

Baylor: we know that the second title was with illegally-recruited kids. But, let's think of something else. How many of the Baylor kids made Academic All Big Twelve? How many could survive elsewhere? That entire program is funky. Is there a Caton Hill amongst them? When anything about Baylor becomes a standard, we are in trouble.

Find me five five-stars from Oklahoma.

I understand your point, Syb. That’s what we have now, however.

The point is not only more bodies but bodies that are at least as good as Maddie and Vivi.

We aren’t even close to that.

I saw 3 other girls playing TODAY from Oklahoma on other teams. Why didn’t Sherri get them?? Sherri previously recruited great players from Canada Chicago several from California, hmmmmmmm. She’s lazy these days. Joe C should tell her to get after it or retire in my opinion.

And you can bash on Mulkey all you want by they have been kicking everyone in the Big-12’s butts for years, so say what you want but she is a winner. Sure it would be nice for an academic all Big-12 but not having them and losing like we are. And I think Texas is getting great players from all around to and kicking our butts. OU’s women’s program now is an afterthought and very average to a little below average.

I haven’t been on this board long but it seems like there are a few on here that Sherri can do no wrong. But if you can take your homer glasses off and call a spade a spade then you would see it how several I’ve read on here do.

Or we could all just do what Syb recommends and be content and satisfied with what SC has done in the past and rest on those accomplishments alone year-in and year-out. Not enough for me. Something needs to change! There's no excuse for us only bringing in two Quality freshman when we had what we had leave the program and 5 others graduate. When those two girls transferred out in May those coaches should have been out there recruiting their butts off and landing more players.

Sherri recruits the players along with her assistants.
Sherri coaches/develops the players along with her assistants.
Sherri has total control over her staff makeup.

This slide is all on Sherri. It's been happening the last 4 years. Her coaching ability hid it for a year or two. But the talent gap is wide.
Ortiz lack of development is stunning pretty much. It's a huge blown evaluation of her HS ability or a huge blow coaching opportunity. Her summer player with the US team her sophomore year I think was baffling.
The inability to have more scorers/shooters/ Big 12 caliber players is all on Sherri.

Now Sherri has improved recruiting the last two classes. The same massive kick in the ass Bob got in improving recruiting maybe finally happening for Sherri.Bob was not allowed to let things slip like Sherri because of all the eyes on football. But make no mistake the issue of coaching tenure/burnout was there with Bob and Sherri has them as well. Bob got OU back to the top but knew he didn't have it any longer to maintain
that level of effort and walked away before staining his legacy like Bowden and others. Having a promotable replacement in house helped that transition.
And I'll tell you LR is a much better HBC recruiter than Bob ever was. On the field/program manager, we will see how LR does without Baker. But as a recruiter, Baker is what you need
in today's environment.

Recruiting has also changed in huge ways for all sports. The impact of social media in recruiting is staggering. Sherri was glacially slow to react to that movement. So was Bob.
If I was Sherri I'd redirect some salary and go get a new hot assistant coach. Former player would be great. Guard developer. Pam's doing good work in post development. Hell even EJ has show improvement this year.
We have elite guards incoming and on campus.

OK, Atlanta. I think you are partly right. We don't have quite as much talent as we did. It is possible that there was a slide a few years ago. Let's see if we might find some explanation.

1. We had enough talent after Paris graduated to make it to another Final Four, her third.
2. A part of that team was due to the success of a newcomer who was lost with a torn ACL and was never same again, especially after a second torn ACL---Whitney Hand. We had the rest of the makings of a team: a highly-ranked post from Plano and forward from Ohio with famous relatives. Both were athletes. Neither really were what we had thought. We also recruited a Parade All-American (Griffin) and McDonald''s All-American (Aaryn). Should have been enough to rebuild.

3. We got the guard that Sherri had wanted for four years. She was adequate (Hook) as well as another All-American forward (Kornet). Were they great stars?

4. We got a tremendous talent who looked like exactly what we needed, only to have her tear an ACL before the season began, two years in a row. We got another great highschool All-American to transfer from A&M. She was good.

How many of these panned out. They were decent recruits who just lacked the ability to take the next step up. Manning was a tragedy. Had she been healthy, I think we might have been quite good every year.

Can't say that I was excited about the year we got Kaylon and Cloman. But, we got two really highly-rated kids in Dungee and Mulkey, and both could have been successful if they had cared enough to learn to do what they needed to do.

Ana and Shaina can't really be faulted, probably #1 and #2 in the Big Twelve for freshman of the year. Although Baylor has some people coming in who are good, and Texas has Collier, it wouldn't surprise me if Madison or Tatum wasn't freshman pf the year next year. From what Collier said about Madison, it is a real possibility.

Now, let's add a personal issue. Sherri's best friend is Jan. Exactly when was Jan afflicted with cancer? Think that might have distracted both for a year?
