Berry Tramel column

I need 4 back to back classes where at least one top 20 player is added. If that talent base can be built up then winning at the previous level of 2001-2010 can be accomplished.
The real question is does Sherri have the drive to recruit like this every year?
Was 2018 an aberration or the new normal.
Bob recognized he was done. And I give him all the credit for that. Walking away from a Baker led team and $5million could not have been easy.
However, he internally took score and realized it was time.
No one wants to see Sherri fired or pushed out. I want to see her go out on top, and move on.
Joe C can then hire the best coach moving forward.
I doubt that Sherri wants to remain much longer. But, I would be concerned that OU might face the plight of Tech or Colorado. Without a Marsha Sharp, Tech has become an afterthought, if that much. Is there someone that can build a program at OU? I don't think it is as easy as her detractors want to believe. UT went a long time between Conradt and Aston, including putting a lot of faith in GG. What about Oklahoma suggests a GG type would come?

Fortunately, I think her fan base is stronger than message boards.

Whether you agree with BT's column or not Sherri has been floundering around with this program since 2009.You can have the toughest schedule in the world, but if you don't have the talent(athletically & numbers wise)it really doesn't matter.Bottom line Sherri & staff have just not got it done with recruiting & developing players on a consistent basis.First Baylor and now Texas are flexing their muscles for Big 12 supremacy. Some of you that post regularly on here would no doubt drive your car off a cliff before ever criticizing Sherri for anything.Sherri has a couple of great freshman that hopefully will get better & not leave like the last two did, then OU has a chance to be better next year with a decent class coming in.I still think the lack of effort & developing players by this staff will just continue on the path of mediocrity for this program.I really hope I'm wrong.Go Sooners!!!

+1 Also, we all know KM was throwing shade at SC about a team that goes downhill like ours seldom ever comes back. Like her or loathe her, she was spot on.

Now that's an interesting post. Clearly you are saying OU WBB is likely to never recover. So, why in the world scream for a new coach. You claim it is hopeless anyway.

Some of us are actually hoping it does get better, believe it or not.

Girl, you know what he really meant. Don't try to twist it.

But if you think about it, we might not recover if Sherri continues to coach and recruit like she has in the last decade.

syb,
Okay, you are right. Say Sherri walks away next year after a 18 to 20 win season/ncaa tournament spot with good to great young talent on the roster.
There's no guarantee that the next coach can take OU to Final Fours. Hiring coaches is a huge gamble.
But we've all seen the result when burned out long term coaches stay too long. It's not pretty. OU and Bob managed that process almost perfectly last summer.
I'd like to see the 2018 team play and 2019 recruiting class signed before making too many bold declarations.
Preseason most of us saw this coming. We all knew the roster problems/talent limitations/ potential ceiling/floor for this team.
Next year is poised to be very exciting and with the youth of the team very frustrating. But the talent mix is poised to be the best since the last FF run.

I fear what we might do if Sherri left. I have very little confidence in the athletic department with regards to women's basketball, not a lot with basketball in general. I would feel a lot better if I thought Dionnah Jackson was on the shortest list as a replacement. Could help overcome what I see as a major difficulty in recruiting.

But, let's say that Sherri were to leave now. Would we even have an incoming class? Would her departure cause Tatum and Madison to look elsewhere? Then, let's look at next year's signing class. We have a decent shot at what could be a superstar in Amihere. She can jump. She is friends with Shaina. But, would she even consider OU if Sherri were to leave?

The future is based on yesterday, today, and tomorrow. We can't jeopardize today and tomorrow.

I would love to see Dionnah as assistant head coach. But, does anyone ever get over Jan? I see them leaving together.

I would not wany Sherri to leave at all!!I just wish she would shake up her staff & hit the road recruiting harder. She resurrected the womens program back up from the dead & she has had some great players just not enough of them consistently.Go Sooners!!

I can’t imagine Jackson not being on the short list.

Not too long ago I posted about the possibility that Chad may move on.

I don’t think anything significant other than that happens in the next two years because of the prospect of team improvement.

It’s somewhat ironic to me that Chad, who coaches guards, might be moving on, when they are the best part of our team.

Is it time for Sherri to move on? Would I be sorry if she did? Yes — and a bit. Let’s just sit back and see what happens.

SC is paying the price for not keeping having 15 scholarship players.

In my opinion, the poor performances of both men and women basketball is due to poor assistant coaches. I see no development on either team. Look at softball where Patty has a great assistant handling the pitching staff. Look at KJ who has a great assistant who complements her strengths.

Frankly, we should be able to get this kind of results at a quarter the cost.

I would be happy if both basketball coaches moved on.

And what coach at OU hits all the Summer Softball going on across the country to recruit, it is Patty Gasso. Every single player on OU softball plays Summer ball and they hit tournaments all over the country. You can complain that kids are going everywhere to play or you can go recruit. Ask Patty Gasso, how she spends her Summers. That is how you win, you recruit.
"It aint the Xs and Os. It's the JImmies and Joes" Switzer. Sherri doesnt like to recruit and it shows. Even a blind sow can find an acorn but having only one great player without adequate help will get headlines but not championships. It's been sometime since we were competitive consistently for just the BIG XII Championship much less for anything greater. Somehow our players dont get much better after their sophomore year. We seem to be 3-4 every year in the Big XII due to Sherrti being a god coach. If she were as good a recruiter I think we would consistently challenge for number 1. I dont understand why anyone can expect more than we have been getting the last several years.

Teams with less than 15 players on roster are quite common. Most coaches only use 7 or maybe 8 in a normal rotation. Having 14 vying for playing time maKes it harder to keep every player happy. I think if we did studies of all the schools with short rosters we would find they are just as successful as those with 14 or 15 on scholarship.

The route to success is having the ones you got be talented.

Exactly Tango! I’d be surprised if there were more than 20% of D1 teams carrying 15 players on their roster. Even Hypocrite U has only 10 on their roster including injured players. I’m not sure why this is but recently its a trend. Sherri also did not plan on having such a small group.

For certain you need more than 10 players on a roster. With less you cannot have a full scrimmage. I would suggest 12-13 players as probably an optimum number as it gives you a couple of players to allow for injuries or inability to participate in practice for other reasons but avoids a bench of 10 players of which only 3-4 reserves are getting adequate playing time to stay motivated.

I think that what happens at Baylor is typical of most schools. Kim prefers to play most of the time with 7-8 players but with reserves who can perform well. She basically operates on a "wait your turn" approach. The problem is in recruiting those quality reserves and keeping them happy while they develop. They are enticed to be a member of a top-performing team and by the strong institutional and fan support at Baylor.

I imagine that at the end of each season, Kim sits down with each player to discuss her performance and prospects. For some of the players, eventually turning pro is one of life goals. If they cannot be promised sufficient playing time to develop a good resume, their hopes fade and they transfer or otherwise leave the team. A good example was last year when Baylor had 4 outstanding "bigs." Cave graduated, leaving Brown, Cox, and Beatrice Mompremier. Beatrice decide to transfer. Someone on this year's team who waited her turn is Dekeiya Cohen, a major contributor to Baylor's success.

With 10 players now and 2 graduating, Baylor has 5 highly-regarded newcomers arriving for next season.

This is an interesting discussion. There are several key factors that have to be considered in setting team size. Here are a few.

1. Generally you need to fill up your roster. Consider the outcry if the NCAA selected some schools and limited them to fewer players than other schools. Oh, that's right. They do that sometimes: When they put schools on probation for violations. Don't do it to yourself - it generally puts you at a disadvantage.. In addition, some players develop better than others. By filling your roster, your chance of having 8-9 really good players is higher. Also, injuries & transfers happen. You must be prepared for that.

2. At times a coach may realize that the next recruiting year is going to produce a number of players you both want & believe you can sign. You must plan ahead for space to accommodate that. For that reason, it makes ense to have a couple of open slots at times. But not on a consistent basis.

3. You need to have competitive practices. Even 10 players means you probably practice with some players not being nearly as skilled as your players will face in actual games. Practice does not make perfect. But PERFECT practice makes perfect. In practice you want your players to be up against the best possible competition. That is made more likely with a larger roster.

4. You need a balanced team in terms of class level. The last thing you want is to have 8 or 9 freshmen (or any class), so when they become seniors, your team is decimated by graduation. Keep things balanced to avoid that.

I'm sure you can think of others.
