Bench, unproven guard play, they weren’t any good last year & lost 3 of their top 4 scorers.
That's a weird take... most teams with Oscar and Culver up front would be pretty damn happy. Likely both NBA players. How many teams can say that? Oscar is the #1 rebounder in high school basketball, and Culver is a total beast on the glass. You know how strange it is to get multiple 20+ rebound games in college basketball as a true freshman? Or to average a double double as a true freshman? Nobody is going to out-rebound these guys and they are going to maul people on the offensive glass.
The point guard and the small forward averaged 14ppg and 16ppg, respectively, over the last 10 games of the season. The small forward (Haley) is 6'7'' 220 and had 87 assists. To put that in perspective... Calixte had 70.. Doolittle had 50... Manek had 26.. James had 63... Only Bienemy had more assists on OU than their small forward did. He is very skilled on the wing. He's like a point forward.
I would say McCabe, Haley, Culver, and Oscar are pretty safe bets for next year. They do need Sherman and McNeil to pan out to truly compliment the post players, but they should be good regardless. This team is going to man-handle people up front.
Taz Sherman (6'4'' 180)
Sherman was the fourth-leading scorer in junior college’s upper division, averaging 25.9 points, while shooting 39 percent from 3-point range. He also averaged 4.8 assists and 4.8 rebounds per game and shot 87 percent from the foul line.
“Taz adds tremendous athleticism to the guard position,” Huggins said. “He is very fast with the ball. His quickness and length will be welcomed as we reintroduce Press Virginia.”
Sean McNeil
Juco transfer with 3 years to play. He averaged 29.7 points per game including shooting 49% from the field and 43% from three. Likely a shooter off the bench. Unlike Sherman, he played in a lower level of juco basketball so his numbers are very bloated. Had offers from Oregon, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, West Virginia, Dayton, Western Kentucky, and Ole Miss.
“Sean gives us another physical guard who is a tremendous 3-point shooter,” West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said in a release. “He brings a physical mentality to the guard position, while also giving us an outstanding rebounder in the backcourt.”
